Dealing with stumps

I've seen the aftermath of a 60k/lb chain breaking (breaking strength, don't recall load rating). Had one of those big semi mac type trucks puling backwards and the chain snapped and shot through the thick metal grill and radiator. Looked like they had rammed it into a steel beam at high speed. Not a big round hole, but if you didn't know what did it you wouldn't be able to picture the damage any other way. The chain alone weighed like 100lbs @ ~25ft. I'm sure that could kill a person.

I wonder if a tree stump could put up that much fight?

Even if the stump won't move, the truck can't put up that much fight, at least, not my truck. Yeah, I have seen some catastrophic failures, and the forces at play will sober you up fast. Was working in Davisville, RI unloading rig supply boats one time, and the crane operator had me slap a choker on tons of used rig anchor cable. This was big loops of wire cable something like 9" in diameter, hundreds of feet of it. The choker was rusted and frayed and I gave the hand sign for a new choker, and the asshole leans out of his cab to yell at me to put the "damn thing on." So I did. It broke with the whole mess hanging about 40' off the dock. Made a nice thump when it landed. Now I'd tell the operator to go f*ck himself, but back then I mostly did what I was told.

I do long for those simple days when we could blow stuff up and the neighbors would just chuckle, rather than call Homeland Security and dive into their Patriot Bunkers.
