OK, this is fusion hot. From the item description, these will should work with a switch for internet routing to a lot more then 2 ports. I bought one and plan on using it with a cable modem and a 16 port 10/100 switch. If there are still more available when I get mine set up, I will post again and tell how it works.

airmax,

I don't know but any product that advertised itself as a DSL router is VERY likely to support PPPOE.

I bought this router as a backup in a similar CompUSA deal a few weeks ago. I have not used it yet but I checked the manual and it has instructions on how to setup PPPoE, so it does support it. And yes, you can easily expand it for more than two PCs by plugging a hub into one of the two ethernet ports.

Just picked one up last night at the CrapUSA in Culver City, CA. They had a humongous stack of em so I wouldn't worry about supply. Seems to be a great HOT deal to me . . . haven't installed yet but it has all the basic features common in most broadband routers.

thanks

<< How would this router work on a two computer network (no hub)? >>

Inastall a NIC (Network Interface Card) in each computer then use CAT 5 ethernet cable to connect them to the two router ports. The LAN side of the router acts a DHCP router to create your own little LAN and the WAN side connects to your cable/DSL modem.

I tried the speedstream 2-port router about a month ago and didn't like it. It introduced about a 2-second delay in web activity and the mtu wasn't set correctly for pppoe. And there was no way to change the mtu value. Maybe firmware updates can fix the mtu but the delay was just too much to put up with.

I bought this and was unimpressed with the build quality (all plastic) compared to the DLink 704. BUT, it does work great and has the same number of ports as computers I use at home (2) so it was a perfect fit. And the price can't be beat. It also has settings for a DMZ, etc. so it can be used for gaming. I had none of the lag that was mentioned earlier and setup was a breeze, literally plugged it in and went.

Looks awfully hot to me -- great for the people who missed out on the $20 netgear router a few months ago. Anybody know how this would compare to the Linksys router in terms of reliability? A friend bought one of these for a friend of a friend for christmas, and I'm wondering if I should convince him to return it and get this instead. I've read some bad reviews about the linksys hardware failing quite often.

TheDebater: You don't even need to use the uplink, I think, since it's MDI/MDI-X compliant.

I got one of these. They ran the same deal about six weeks ago. The thing has been completely reliable and was very easy to setup. If you don't need more ports it really works well. You can add a switch later if you need more ports. Personally, I don't want more boxes under my desk so I wouldn't go that way, but I only need two ports right now. Really a good deal if you only need two ports.

My only copmlaint is one that applies to most all routers (the new D-Link model doesn't do this but it is brand new and expensive). Why do they put the input on the front and the output on the back? Why can't all connections be on the same face? Its really annoying for routing wires.

Im pretty sure all Linksys routers are all on the back... At least my 4 port one is...

P.S.- Thanks for the HOT deal, just helped out a bunch of my friends lookin for a cheap router solution... THANKS!

Hi, I just purchased this router and am having trouble setting it up. I hookep up all the wires correctly. My 3com cable modem (looks like a shark fin) uses some special cable called an "RJ45 cable" with only 4 wires in it. It will not work with standard ethernet cable (8 wires within). I plugged the wire from my cable modem to my router, and then 2 regular ethernet cables to each computer. Everything is hooked up ok.

When I congifure it by going to http://192.168.254.254, I set up some stuff, and everything seems OK. However, when I go to status, it says "Cable/Internet: Disconnected" I tried turning the modem on and off and made sure everything was OK, still no luck. Pleeeeeease help!!!! Thanks.

RJ45 is used for normal ethernet. Use a normal ethernet cable from the modem to the router.

Nope, I can't run a normal ethernet cable from the router to the modem, I even asked tech support with my cable company. My modem specifically uses a thin "RJ45 cable" with 4 wires in it. I know that all the cables use RJ45 ends, but this specific cable is named "RJ45 Cable." I don't even think this is the problem, because it always worked from my cable modem directly to my computer....

Some modems come with a 4 wire cat 5 but it is usually to hook the wall plate to the modem. I've never heard of a DSL modem that didn't have the standard 8 wire cat 5 ethernet out on the back (usb and pci excluded of course). Sounds like you may need a x-over cable instead of straight cable.

Have you either cloned your MAC address from the network card that was previously attached to the cable modem (not sure if this router supports that), or have you given your cable provider the new MAC address of the router?
