in 2 months the mobile cpu will be nearly two generations behind though, not that it isnt still viable, just a little behind the curve.

Not worth it. You can buy another in 2 years that will be twice as fast for ~$400.

and the reason grandma still has a win98 pc is because she just recently figured it out after 7 years and it would be pointless to spend $900 on her a laptop that would take until after the turn of the decade to figure out it doesnt have to be plugged in to turn on.

Fact is core duo offers a nearly 2x improvement in multitasking scenarios, and even a decent improvement in single threaded tasks, in the same power envelope. Core 2 Duo, in august, will improve at least 30% on the single threaded performance with either faster clocks for same power, or same clocks for less power, while also still 2x improvement in multitasking. Making the very good Pentium M look somewhat like a celeron, no? dont need that much performance? probably also dont need a $500 laptop, and would be fine with a $2-300 desktop that would be upgradeable/fixable down the road. If you are gonna be spending the money anyways, get your moneys worth with the core duo, x1400 upgradeable graphics deals for $700 lately or something like that.

This isnt meant as a thread crap, but sensibility says that cheap doesnt always mean "hot deal".

And another 4 years after that you can buy one twice as fast as that for even less.

What an argument

And in 10 years you can find one that is 4 times faster and half the price. And in 20 years you might be dead

I think its a perfectly valid point. If your computer failed after 2 years of the warranty, you could just spend the money you would have spent buying the warranty on a new computer and end up with a faster, working computer.

So then when that system dies in a year and a month and Dell won't do anything for you because it's a month past warranty, what will pops do then?

Way too many what ifs and such going on here. Fact of the matter is, you can keep waiting all you like, but if you never pull the trigger, what's the point? <$500 for a 1.8ghz Dothan and 1GB RAM is a great price. Sure, you could wait two years for a Core 2 Duo laptop to reach this price, but then at that time there will be something faster than it available.

Who is waiting? You buy the laptop NOW, you just don't need a 4 year warranty. If you really want to protect yourself a 2 year is fine.

fyi: Dell has been running promotions on this model for several months, off and on.

Got one for a family member a couple months ago at $499 w/ DVD burner & 60GB drive included. That said, it's still a good deal.

How long does the battery last on this? Its only 29WHr, and the 56WHr is $50 more.

Ballpark guess is if it's a Centrino, the 29Whr will get you around 2 hours and the 56 WHr will get you about 4 hours. Possibly more depending on screen brightness and what the computer is doing those 2-4 hours.

LOL Dell you are stupid. I find that laptop useless without at least a 9 cell battery. I will continue to recommend Compaq/HP to my customers until you start offering _real_ mobility. A 4 cell battery is laughable at best. Nice case though.

Regarding warranty issues:

Buy any laptop like this with the stock one-year warranty and purchase with a Platinum Visa or Mastercard (or similar card) that has the automatic extended warranty benefit (check your card benefits) where they tack on up to one year for warranties up to one year. Translation: buy it with a one-year warranty and get two years of protection. In two years, even if your laptop is still running, you may just want to buy a new one anyway. Use the Citicard Dividends Platinum (no annual fee) and you can do this and get 3% back (1% on all puchases + 2% added for Dell through the Citi Dividends website).

Does anyone know what kind of international service Dell provides on their warranties? If I'm in Australia and my laptop dies, do they send out a box to ship it in for reparis, like IBM?

Sweet. Where's the Compaq/HP laptop with comparable specs and 9 cell battery for $449 you speak of? I need to buy one for a relative. Thanks.

Thanks. I bought one for my wife.
Can't beat the price for the cpu speed, 1gig, free wireless and free router.
VERY SCHPIFFY.
Battery's a little concern, but cpu being 2.5/3 gen. behind doesn't bother me one bit at this price.

Why on earth does anyone think that "grandma" needs a Core Duo? People have been running IE fine on 10 year old PC's as far as I can tell. For this market segment, cheap DOES mean good deal.

I think dell will manage just fine without your recommendation.
