Not worth it. You can buy another in 2 years that will be twice as fast for ~$400.

And another 4 years after that you can buy one twice as fast as that for even less.

What an argument

If the waiting game continues for a better computer and a better price, you'll never buy a computer!!!

Not to crap either, because I was about to jump on this. but at FW there is a mention that it is a 14.1 moniter in a 15inch lcd case...main reason why i held off.

Good luck for those who want it though!

Yes, I believe that's the case. The disadvantages of a small screen coupled with the disadvantages of a chunky chassis. I don't think this is very hot with a Celeron M. With that said, I've seen e1405 and e1505's with Core Duo's for under $650. I say spend a bit more for a good amount more quality.

Translation: buy it with a one-year warranty and get two years of protection. In two years, even if your laptop is still running, you may just want to buy a new one anyway. Use the Citicard Dividends Platinum (no annual fee) and you can do this and get 3% back (1% on all puchases + 2% added for Dell through the Citi Dividends website).

Does anyone know what kind of international service Dell provides on their warranties? If I'm in Australia and my laptop dies, do they send out a box to ship it in for reparis, like IBM?

I think i've heard that dell offers worldwide support. But you should just call and ask.
Good questions though. I'm sure you can as people would bring laptops when they travel.

Apples & oranges. A laptop takes up a lot less space, uses less juice, and is moveable (show off pictures, play a DVD, take it along on a weekend ...). Lots of things that make a laptop useable to an average user have nothing to do with the CPU specs.

most grandma's want something with a bigger screen. Indeed grandma (or elderly parent) doesn't need mobility, she needs a desktop replacement, albeit a low end one. The main advantage of a notebook/laptop over a true desktop for grandma is that it's easier to set up - no cables to connect (except for power cable). Also easier to use because of the automatic suspend/hibernate most laptops have. But if you can set it up for her, a desktop (with a bigger screen) would be a better gift for grandma.

This is the first decent argument against this deal in the thread. The rest of them are:

Assinine comment #1: "But who wants integrated video?"

A: If you need better video, you're not going to be able to get it at bargain basement prices, so obviously the deal's not for you.

Assinine comment #2: "But it's not the fastest!"

A: Duh... if you want the fastest out there, you're going to pay more for it. If you want the "latest generation," you're going to pay more for it. Personally, I see no point in having the latest generation, because there'll always be "the next generation" of chips on the horizon. Why pay a premium now for something that'll be a better bargain later, unless, of course, owning the latest and greatest is your thing? Of course, if that's the case, there's no point in trying to find a hot deal because you're going to pay a premium to own the best.

Assinine comment #3: "In two years it'll be cheaper!"

A: Show me a computer that won't be.

The point is that you have to evaluate each deal based on what it is now, not what it's going to be in two years or what better options you'll have in the future. Because some people are in the market to buy today, and the hot deals in this forum are for those people. You can always wait for a potentially better deal... but that doesn't mean that the deals going on now aren't good. So evaluating the deal based on the value that it offers now makes sense, and this one will definitely appeal to a large customer base.

For $450, you get:

1 GB RAM
40 GB HD
1.5 Ghz Mobile Celeron (not the fastest, but for basic use, it's more than adequate)
CD Burner/DVD
Internal wireless
Wireless router
Cheap battery (fine for many types of users... most places I take my laptop I can find an outlet)
1 year warranty (makes sense... at the rate laptops become outdated)
Integrated modem/NIC
Windows XP Home

For a second machine to take on travel (hotel use), or even as a primary machine for basic users, this is a bargain at $450. You're not going to do much better at this price point for a laptop if you're ready to buy today. I don't need it, personally, but I recognize that it would appeal to probably a majority of the market, and is therefore a hot deal... so nice post.

I deal with Dell warranty on occasion at work and they are great. I had 3 machines all have their onboard NIC cards fried during an electrical storm and Dell replaced the motherboards no questions asked. So far I can't find anything to complain about with the service I have received.

Please note that the Intel Pro Wireless listed in the catalog is not compatible with the processor for this system. We have substituted Dell wireless to address this issue. For Free Intel 2915 Wireless with this system please call 1-800-600-6215.

:Q free upgrade?

He was saying that it doesn't make sense to buy a four year warranty, not that it doesn't make sense to buy the laptop. Its actually a very good arguement, but I guess it wasn't quite obvious enough.

Wise words for someone with only 7 other posts! Not that post count indicates wisdom
