Dear ATOT, what is the best way to break in a baseball glove?

It's been years since I bought a new glove and I don't remember how I broke in the one I had when I was a kid. My youngest is playing little league so I got a new glove so we can play catch but it's pretty stiff right now. What I remember is rubbing oil into the palm and then rubber-banding a baseball into the pocket and sleeping on it overnight but was wondering if this was still standard.

I googled and found some vids that say to use hot water on the outside of the leather and then to pound it with a weighted baseball or dumbbell. Does this work?

Sort of depends what kind of glove you bought. A lot of kid gloves are fake materials that don't respond to the traditional methods of breaking in a leather glove.

I just put a ball in the webbing and strap it down and place it under a mattress for a few days to get a good shape in the webbing of a ball. Then I just loosen up the glove my bending the crap out of it for a few hours getting some of the stiffness out. Even with all that my sons hand strength isnt strong enough to open and close the glove but a handful of times around the ball.

I have complete faith in this guy's knowledge on breaking in a glove.. But I'd probably just go to a batting catch and catch a bunch of balls or do it the way you mentioned. When I was a kid it was a metal can of Glovolium. For my son's gloves we've been using this Nokona stuff and I like it better. It's thicker, but just melts in.

No Smell that i recall, just make sure you dont forget its in there like i did.

Yes! That is the video I watched. He was featured in another one where he takes a pro's glove and breaks it in while the pro waits.

From time to time I hear people say they put a ball in the pocket and then park their car on it. Seems like overkill to me

But presumably it would have to be some kind of leather oil, right?

I don't know. My wife took my son shopping at dicks this weekend and bought him a glove and the oil the guy on the floor recommended. It came in a white bottle. I followed the directions and it appears to be working ok. I will probably apply it again just to make it more supple.

Thanks! I don't know why I didn't ask the salesperson at Modell's what they recommended for breaking in the glove I bought.
