Out of curiosity, how many years will it take to fix the Sunni-Shi'ah relationship? Or the Islamic-Kurdish? Or the Arab-Persian?

Those three are likely the largest destabilizing factors in the region. Given how successful the US has been in the last 200+ years of fixing religion and race issues (with racial effigies popping up, religious smear campaigns, and so on), how many more days of progress will it take in this conflict that's gone on for 1300+ years?

That's not to say I feel we ought to turn our backs on the region, but more that the time frames of days or years is disingenuous given the magnitude of the problem. Decades or centuries is much more likely before we see stability and peace in the region of Iraq.

Our goal is not to "fix" those issues. Our goal is simply to ensure that the Iraqi government is strong and capable enough to address those issues themselves. (Leadership, laws, police, well-trained standing army that is large enough to defend itself from external aggression and terrorism, etc).

In those we are making great progress...
