Dear Snickers:

Thanks for shrinking the "fun size" Snickers bars down to the size of a rabbit turd, you greedy fucks.

Fuck you,

Twix still kicks ass.

But all candy bars pale in comparison to real chocolate (e.g. Rogers or Daniel in Vancouver).

Agree, Butterfingers, KitKat, Almond Joy are at the top of my list.

Most of the industry has been moving to using to vegetable oil instead of cocoa butter, much to the dismay of chocolate fans, so this would explain why a lot of candy may not have the same taste.

However, Mars was initially resisting this transition, so I'm not sure why Snickers would taste much different. That said, I agree - Reese's (one of my old faves) just doesn't taste very good anymore. Oh well.

candy tastes awesome, but the fun-size mars/hersheys/etc candy tastes like crap. go to a chocolatier and get something and you're like punched in the mouth with flavor.

lindt truffles? frigging awesome.
bite-size snickers? fuck that.
taste buds tend to get more sophisticated as we get older and more experienced?

I was watching Cook's Illustrated on tivo last night. they were recreating a recipe that originally existed as a Betty Crocker mix. there was a good discussion about how the mixes we love as kids taste flat as adults because we're looking for a richer flavor experience.

That's only partly true - many makers have switched to different (read:cheaper) ingredients to save money.

Not that mass-produced stuff would match the smaller or more discriminating makers anyway, but it's still true that things have changed.

idk, I'd question how much of that is just in people's heads (like the blind taste tests of sugar v HFCS where people couldn't tell the difference)

Cocoa butter vs vegetable oil. Even Mars publicly resisted the move when other companies began doing it, saying it "wasn't real chocolate".

To me it's not so much a taste as it is a texture. I think cocoa butter has a richer, creamier texture to it than the vegetable oil variants.

how do you expect these "corporations" to make more money? you want them to do something other than to cut cost(quality) and raise prices? HA!

They technically can't even call it milk chocolate. As a result, they call it "chocolate candy".

They're free to do what they decide, but trying to get the FDA's definition of "milk chocolate" changed in order to keep selling it as such is just misleading.

most can definitely tell the difference.

i've done plenty of blind taste tests with throwback pepsi and hfcs pepsi and almost everyone could taste the difference.

in foods, however, it's different because they use hfcs42, where the sweetness level is way lower than regular sugar. they need to use much more of it in order to match the equivalent sweetness that sugar would achieve.

anyways, i'm going into a different topic altogether that, for some reason, is a hot button topic in the forums... so, i'll leave it alone.

yeah, tastebuds change... that's true. however, for some reason, fun size just tastes different than full size. full size tastes better and has a better texture altogether than fun size.

reese's peanut butter cups are totally different tasting based on size and shape. for example, the easter egg shaped cups taste different than the normal cups... the reason is the peanut butter to chocolate ratio. depending on the shape and size up the cup, you end up with different proportions of ingredients. it is my opinion that the mini reese's peanut butter cups are the best tasting of all the shapes and sizes of cups reese's has to offer... second best is the egg-shaped reese's peanut butter cup.
