Now i'm not saying you are wrong about local laws, but I would want to be damn sure before making this choice, I would hate a dog to be put down because animal control worded the law to you to make it seem different then how it really had to be by law.

You were right that he could (I just spoke with the officer), but the risk is too great. Kids don't follow rules, unfortunately.

You have a Great Dane that bites people? Why did your kid know that he might bite? Was this a common issue with strangers?

Socialize your dog better, next time. Consider getting a smaller, less (potentially) dangerous breed, given that you're apparently incapable to raising a large dog that doesn't attack people.

I know, I know. I wasn't home at the time he took him.

Sorry to hear about that. We had a dachshund when I was a kid that was kept in our fenced-in back yard. We went out-of-town for a couple of nights and left him there. A neighbor kid climbed our fence to play on our playset and the dog bit him. Our insurance company made us get rid of him.

That is beside the point.

This is not your dog's fault, it's not your kid's fault, and it's not your neighbor's fault. It is your fault for not training your dog better. An aggressive great dane is absolutely unacceptable in a residential area. You should have socialized him since he was a puppy, with the understanding that if he grew up with an aggressive temperament that something like this would likely happen.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but if you want to avoid something like this in the future then you need to recognize what you did wrong in the first place.

Sorry for your loss.

under the circumstances, i think you are doing what you gotta do
sorry man

unless you have a time machine and kidnap Cesar Millan and take him back to when the dog was a puppy, it's too late

Sorry you and your family are going through this. Like most, I agree you've got the right mindset and are doing the right thing. Doesn't make it suck any less.

Is this a training issue? Was he not well-trained? Most pet dogs don't bite, from what I understand. If so, are there no other options? Can he be trained by a professional?

From the sounds of it, both instances happened around the children. I can't help but think the dog is just protecting the kids from strangers.

This is bullshit that you had to go through this OP. I'm sorry to hear this.

RIP Trooper.

I had to put a dog down under similar circumstances, but before he harmed anyone else. I am sorry you and your family had to go through this. I do not envy what you have to do with your kids about this one.
Take care.

This.

I am aware this might feel like rubbing salt in fresh wound, but this tragedy was completely avoidable. And unfortunately, as the responsible adult in the picture, you take most of the blame.

Great Danes are huge dogs, not to be adopted lightly. They need to be very well trained. At the same time, they are very friendly - they love being with other animals, kids and people in general. The fact that Trooper was not so, speaks to his training, or lack thereof. The very first time he bit somebody, should have been your warning to step in, recognize the problem and correct it. Good training at even that stage might have fixed it. But looking at your post it's very clear you have been (and still are) in denial : the lady pet him without permission, the mailman leaned into the house. No, the fault was not with them, particularly looking at the breed of the dog. (And I mean the real fault : please don't split hairs here about each circumstance).

I hope you take this in the right spirit : if you get another dog, know the breed, know your responsibilities. Even rottweilers can be loveable with the right environment, and Great Danes are actually cuddly compared to Rotts.

Oh come on. Animals have animal instincts. What about the fucking tiger that attacked Siegfried/Roy? Raised its entire life NOT to do that but it's a fucking animal. I understand from a legal aspect, law is law. But don't sit there and act like you EVER have complete control over an animal(unless he's in a cage 24/7).

I have a great dane. The FRIENDLIEST dog I've ever had(even more so than my golden retriever) but he is such a pussy sometimes he has growled and made me think he would bite someone. He loves my 3 year old niece and every one that comes around him but no matter how much training, an animal has animal instincts.

Christ, I hate I even saw this thread. I'm sorry CPA, puts a damper on my day. Fuck your stupid neighbor.

Darn, probably too late but

Maybe the dog "runs away" and by coincidence your friend "finds" him and takes him to a no kill shelter or to a Great Dane protection society to find him a new home?

This whole thing is shit. I agree with the whole "train your dog" line of thinking ... HOWEVER ...

I had a small dog that was VERY well trained and VERY well socialized. He just didn't want certain people or animals to be around him. He reminded me (or taught me) that people don't have to like everyone, and neither do dogs. He did love most people and several other animals. He was an amazing dog and we had a special bond that I can't describe in words.

I always said that if he was larger - I knew I would be put in a situation at some point where I would have to make this choice. Unfortunately, it sounds like you had a dog that was like mine but fit the bill of being that larger animal ...

RIP Trooper ...

Good grief, it sounds like the law overreacts ridiculously to a couple of minor incidents. Dumbasses who reach for other people's dogs without permission shouldn't be surprised if bad things happen.
