To those trying to blame the victim of the bite here -- assuming the story is as relayed, yes the person was dumb for petting the dog. But what if it had been a young child?

So then the kid would get bitten. Not the end of the world, and it would teach him a lesson.

You are making the right decision. He actually sounds like a pretty mean dog TBH. In any case, he probably would have eventually cost you a lot money in a lawsuit. He may even have become dangerous to your family at some point.

Not mean at all, just not socialized and scared/in fear of strangers.

Sorry to hear about that. We had a dachshund when I was a kid that was kept in our fenced-in back yard. We went out-of-town for a couple of nights and left him there. A neighbor kid climbed our fence to play on our playset and the dog bit him. Our insurance company made us get rid of him.

ISN'T THAT WHAT A GUARD DOG IS SUPPOSED TO DO?

WHAT THE FUCK!!!

If you want I can post a few pictures showing what sometimes happens to kids when they "get bitten".

The world indeed doesn't end. But that doesn't make it acceptable.

did you train the dog at all? If it were me, I would put in all the time and effort needed to make sure my dog had a long happy and life

I know many agility dogs that do not get along well with people.

Even sadder is what Trooper's last hours must have been liked. If he already had fear issues with strangers, to be taken away from strangers, placed in a strange kennel/cage then strapped down and euthanized by strangers.

OP should have been there to comfort Trooper's last moments.

What if a kid running or riding a bike, came close too close to him by mistake? you would have given the kid a Darwin award?? Lot of people loose their children to mad dogs every year... its not funny.
GTFO of this thread. You clearly don't have the simple compassion most humans should have. OP just put his dog down, do you go to funerals and say "yeah crazy old bitch deserved it" as you stand over the body?

I seriously can't believe you pulled the "what if...someone think of the children" card regarding personal responsibility when the person who was bit was told not to get near the dog. Why aren't you railing on her personal responsibility?

Learn some basic social skills.

BTW, wasn't OutHouse a military dog handler? 'Cause that would be icing on the cake.

I don't really care, I tell you to stay away from my properly leashed dog you should be required to stay away from my dog. If you insist on approaching despite my repeated demands to not do so and get bitten then it is your fault, not my dogs fault.

I don't get how some of you guys are making such a huge deal about a dog biting someone twice in it's life. They're animals, sometimes their instincts get ahead of them. It happens. If some guy came into your house beat you up, trashed it, and left with some of your stuff he'd get a small sentence If that. A dog bites you and gets death penalty? There's just no justice here whatsoever.

what the fuck is your problem fucktard? people like me? fuck off i have more dog behavior and training experience than you do in your little finger. stop putting words in my mouth, i never said it was funny, i never said its always the humans fault and i even told CPA in post #23 that he was doing the right thing, long before you polluted this thread with your trolling.. so fuck you.

lol, calm down, you did say that OP did the right thing but then followed it with "it totally sucks some bitch of a neighbor did not listen and got bit". You are the one who was debating about whose fault it was, first you said that whatever happened to the lady was justified, then you talked about invading its private space and what not, then you say that its not a sign of aggressive behavior or something like that, you are constantly trying to defend the dog, I know the difference between clam and aggressive dogs, I have seen enough of them. From what OP posted it was pretty evident that there WAS something wrong with the animal. So stop behaving like it was just another day and nothing is out of the ordinary. There was enough evidence to take extreme steps like what OP did.

Personally I HATE people like you and others in the tread who think its for a dog to bite someone. I feel people like you should go to jail and you and your dogs should be castrated right after the first incident so you cannot spread your filth around anymore.

I witnessed a dog bite a 2yo kid in the face when I was around 10yo.
Both upper K9s pierced his upper cheek just below his eye ball.
Both lower K9s entered under his chin.
Blood gushed everywhere while he rubbed his face and cried.

Unless it is a police or hunting dog, vicious dogs have no place in this world.

gj OP, you did the right thing.

You're entitled to your opinion.

I don't share it, and more importantly, the law doesn't.

Reasonable people don't take dangerous objects out into public places where any number of uncontrollable circumstances -- not hearing, not speaking the same language, a child, someone with mental capacity issues -- can result in tragedy.

If you prefer to be unreasonable, then the results are predictable.

I'll add that if you tell someone to stay away from your controlled and leashed dog and they don't heed your warning and get bit, you should be able to sue THEM.

About the story of the kid getting in the back yard and bitten by the dog that lived there.. Sad to hear that's how it played out.

Reminds of the story of a guy getting killed after jumping in a tiger exibit at a zoo. People thought the tiger should be put down. I forgot how it got around, but someone asked another person, what would you do to keep people out of there? I dunno I'd put a fucking tiger in there to keep people out.

Don't do that! You'll get sued and have to put your tiger down.

What did your <insert numerous censored words here> of a neighbor say? Didn't she hear words "don't come my dog will bite"?

A great dane is an awesome dog, but one that bites people is not made for this world. The bigger the dog the gentler it has to be, unless it's only life is as a guard dog. One bite from a great dane to the face could be tragic.

I pity people like you who compare dogs to humans, no wonder the society is going down the drains... A dog with signs of aggression, who can hurt people who get close to them no matter what the circumstances are, have no place in this society. There are several cases every year where people die because of negligent pet owners like you...

Therefore, I have decided to put him down. It was not an easy decision, but one my wife supports and my kids, while upset, understand. IT FUCKING SUCKS!

I'm a dog guy man, have two large dogs of my own, and I empathize with you. You've only got two options here: either the dog is kept away from people within an enclosure he can't escape from; or you take the option you've decided on. Frankly I don't think the first one provides much of a life for the animal, so like a lot of the others I think you're doing the right thing. It does suck, but unprovoked and un-signaled attacks on people can't be tolerated, especially by a dog of that size and strength. It would be one thing if he laid his ears back and growled, but snapping out and taking some skin off as a first reaction... that's a really bad sign.
