Debating becoming an organ donor...

My personal opinion about being an organ donor is that if I'm dead and have useable parts that will help prolong someone else's life, why would I be selfish? Those organs would just rot away instead of being put to good use (think about it as parting out an old computer, you can still use all the parts in other systems).

The only thing that bothers me about it is the thought of how hard they try to revive you if you do flatline or whatnot. If I'm in serious condition I'd like to have them give it an all or nothing shot to revive me. I don't really want them to do a half assed job and then say "organ donor, time of death *:** lets get those organs!"

Do you think they harvest the organs faster and try less to revive if one is an organ donor?

They don't even consider your organ donor status when trying to revive you. It's illegal and unethical. They still do everything in their power and within whatever rules you may have set up beforehand to keep you alive, even if it means sticking you on life support for 30 years in a vegetative state while somebody could be making use of your organs.

Yes but they have that information when you come in I imagine correct? They'd have to know because they'd have to get the organs right after you died.

I don't know, I think I'll go for it anyways because I don't really care, I was just curious about that portion.

Actually don't they have to take the organs before you actually die? I don't mean that like it sounded, but doesn't the blood still need to be pumping to the organs for them to remain good? DO they put you on a machine to do that?

Imagine if some rich guy really need your heart and so he hire someone to kill you and get the hospital to do the transplant because he's on the board of director or something.

It's like a movie!

Huh? Could you elaborate on this story please?

I am an organ donor but my reasoning was similar to the OP's: If I'm already dead, then my organs are of no use to me. If they can save someone else's life, then all the better. I always thought the "organ donor = lower quality of care" was a consipiracy theory.

Unless you have a DNR, they have to give it their all. Could you imagine all of the lawsuits if doctors really didn't try if they saw the organ donor box checked off?

don't worry you'll be dead. you won't feel a thing.

seriously though, they won't write you off sooner if you are a donor.

Thanks for all the replies (and the humor from some of you haha)

I think when I renew my license I'll check the box. If I'm close to death and someone needed help why not. I'd appreciate the offer from someone else if I was in the opposite situation.

I'm not sure....what if they say "fvck this guy. He doesn't even have the decency to be an organ donor".

I'm still taking mine with me. Oh sure I check the box on the DL thing to be an organ donor to get the discount but I have instructions for my organs to be left intact..........

I'm not letting some random asshat I probably wouldn't like anyway get my sh!t

I've never heard of getting a discount on the fees for your driver's license if you check it.

Way to be an asshat yourself, though.

I ride a motorcycle, so it would be irresponsible of me not to sign my card. Obviously I still wear all my gear, of course

Most of your organs last longer than your brain... I'd rather not be revived as a vegetable.

How would it make you irresponsible? Just because you put yourself in a more likely position to be killed doesn't mean you have a responsibility to donate organs while others don't.

Well to put in a serious note I work in a hospital and I work on a unit that happens to deal with the issue of death quite often and here's the deal, we dont really care if you are an organ donor or not, we'll do everything in our power to save your life unless you have an advance directive dictating what we can and cant do, such as a Do Not Resusitate(DNR) order.

Now when you expire(as we call it in the hospital) or if death is immienet the first thing we do is immediately contact GOL(Gift of Life) inform them of the patient and their status as an organ donor or not and if the person even qualifies for donation, which sadly many dont at the time of death. If they do qualify and their is a waiting donor then the proper procedures/protocols are implemented and you are taken down to the OR to have the organs harvested and shipped to whereever they are needed.

Hope that helps I'm tired from pulling 12 hours at the hospital so I hope I got it correct.
