Yeah... although freshness is key to a lot of organ donation.

I'll feed your slight paranoia. I would recommend getting a copy of an article in the October 2002 issue of Playboy about organ donation. The thing that really surprised me is that in a study of brain death, 185 out of 187 brain dead people died. That means 2 didn't. It also goes onto to talk about life saving measures or lack of, which everyone in authority refutes. But since you are now paranoid...

Also why worry about being selfish? It's your organs. Nobody else has a right to them. Give them because you want to as a gift, not because you feel guilty about it.

It's not that I'd feel guilty about not giving them, I just know that a lot of people die because they don't get the organs necessary.

It's kind of like giving blood, I actually like doing it. If there's just some random place having a blood drive and I haven't given for a while, I just walk in and take 30 minutes out of my life and a little blood with the thought that hopefully I'm helping someone else.

And like I said before, how selfish would it be to let perfectly good organs go to waste because I don't want to be cut up after there is no hope (don't they do that anyways before your funeral?)

dont do it. if you're an organ donor they need to get your organs before you expire. for this fact alone I will never do it no matter the benevolence

Do you think they harvest the organs faster and try less to revive if one is an organ donor?

There was an X-Files ep that was sort of about this issue. IIRC, a doctor was killing patients to get their donated organs.

Having received a cornea a year ago, I'm probably a bit biased but...

 for donation

I'm not sure they'll be able to use mine (I know I can't give blood now) but I am now an organ donor. It seems to be one of things most people don't think about until it affects them (or someone they know), some of my family members have said "Oh maybe I should do that..."

lol the first time around it was fine, but the second time I read the title it struck me as whether or not he should kill himself, in which case his organs would be donated.

They check your credit rating and ability to pay the hospital bill. They need to break even on you.:Q

The Chinese penal system has a great donor program. Folks from all over the world visit China looking for parts since the waiting time is relatively short there.

Don't do it. There was a major scandal back here about a hospital that didn't even attempt to recusitate (sp?) organ donors. Just rip 'em open and take what you can. Finder's keepers!

Man, reading this makes me want to remove the organ donor from my license.

I feel sick now :disgust:

I've never been one until about a month ago when I got a new license, now I'm regretting this decision a little.

Don't get me wrong, I want to help if I can but I just don't like the idea of my organs being shopped around before my body is totally dead, not just technically dead (brain dead)

They try to kill you faster if your an organ donor. It's something they don't like to talk about.

The amount of ignorance and stupidity in this thread is stunning.

Ignorance for those stating absurd reasons for not being a donor and stupidity from the people not getting the zombie joke (and others for that matter)

Can you legally remove your status as an organ donor without getting a new license?

They care A LOT more about how/whether you can pay.

I had a REALLY bad allergic reaction about 9 months ago - I was like passing out in the wheelchair they brought me in with (sitting there going in and out of conciousness)... before they admitted me to the ER. They would have sent me to another hospital if I didn't have insurance...

"Debating becoming an organ donor..."

I though that was a euphemism for committing suicide!

It?s your body, just check the small print on the lease with God and do what you like with it. It?s between you and the big G; and if you don?t believe in God, then you are truly on your own with this (and everything else).

Uh...don't hospitals have to treat in the ER regardless of insurance standing?
