Debating on the next hardware.... hmmmm Advice guys, please

I think I actually know the answer, but I will ask anyway. I have the money, and an DYING to try out a Ryzen 1700x or 1800x, BUT, Its only good for CPU client, and that means I would add it to WCG farm.

OR

Monday or Tuesday the 1080TI is supposed to be out, and my folding farm has 9 slots ready right now, and I love to add folding points. I have the power supplies also in those boxes. and 3500 cuda cores.... drool....

Sooooo, What should I do ?

Thats it, not sure.... One minute I think "ahhh 3500 cuda cores, and 1.2 million ppd for one card" (just a guess),
and then I think "but Ryzen is the most dramatic CPU release in 10 years fro AMD, and kicks arse." and wouldn't I like to play with it ?

Buy the GPU first. GIve AMD a couple more months to sort out Ryzen. As a bonus you will have a better idea which AM4 motherboard actually works best and likely some more newly released ones. Might even benefit from slightly more mature silicon too.

The 1080ti is nice, but it's pretty established what it can do, is it not? I haven't figured the value proposition on it yet, it seems to me that the best ppd/$ will continue to belong to the 1070.

well, things are shaping up... So, I was going to wait a bit (motherboards are scarce for AM4 anyway), but I also don;t know the PPD for the 1080TI, soooo, I am now thinking, 1080 TI next week, and Ryzen next month maybe would be a good choice.

Edit, and I have a bite on my 980's ,,, If those go, I can do both. ($400 for the 980's that are not even plugged in)

Ryzen 1800x seems to be killing it from a perf/watt perspective, it looks to achieve about 90% of a E5-2683 v3 at 25% less power consumption (at stock). With much higher ST, of course.

See, this is why I am curious. I know my 2683's only take about 75 watts fully loaded @ less than one volt and 2500 mhz. But Ryzen is supposed to be 65 watt stock, and thats at 3.7 fully loaded. 16 threads@3.7 vs 28 threads@2.5 with close to the same IPC ? I am dying to know.

But also, if an 1080TI does average over 1.2million ppd @250 watts, thats way less than 2 980TIs @200 each or so.

Now if I could only sell all my old stuff......

ahhh, so if I read that right, thats 128 watts loaded, and if I overclocked to look like an 1800, might be 169 watts loaded. But the question is, at those watts whats the perf in DC compared to my 2683@2.5 ?

The computerbase reviewer points out that idle-to-load delta on Ryzen is about the same as Broadwell-E. (Idle consumption of Ryzen/ X370 is less than Broadwell-E/ X99. The reviewer furthermore points out that actual consumption of Kabylake non-K SKUs is a lot higher than their specified TDP too.)

Given that performance of Ryzen is between Haswell-E and Broadwell-E in many workloads (worse in some, better in others), my guess is that power efficiency of Ryzen is at best a wash with Broadwell-EP (Xeon E5 v4) and only slightly better than Haswell-EP (Xeon E5 v3). Zen's server variant, Naples, will certainly be more efficient than Ryzen due to being configured to run at lower clocks. Of course you could underclock Ryzen and gain efficiency too. (Edit: underclock cap the package power to somewhere less than the default, and let the boost do its work within this power envelope depending on workload.)

Regarding performance in distributed computing applications, my gut feeling is that Ryzen is going to do well in current WCG applications (which apparently do not require AVX throughput and do not have memory scaling problems) but poorly in PrimeGrid (which loves AVX and starves for memory bandwidth when many cores are at work).

So, this is exactly my dilemma, 5 and 5, GPU or CPU, the poll is 50/50.

And the video card is not out yet, and the motherboard I want is OOS, and the HSF bracket not available for the HSF I want.
