Debating without name calling

I have seen over and over people pick out very minor ticks and mannerisms to blast a polititician. Like how they pronounce words, their mannerisms whether it is a strong southern accent or a "folksy feel", if they can raise their arms or what not,...

I just wonder if people can debate on issues and facts without the crud,.... I don't seem to see it, what do you think? And what does that say about America and how the citizens tend to vote?

People are sensitive as hell these days.. If you voice an opinion they don't wanna hear they wanna kick your ass or curse you out...

Exactly what I am thinking,.. but what does that also say about American society now???

I am not saying "hey can't we just get along" crap, but whatever happened to respect, winning on merit, having substance,etc. I realize pointing out flaws and negativity is easier than having substance of your own, but we tend to reward that behavior as a whole.

Too me it seems that it has been happening more in a direct correlation with technology and that it is degrading the moral and ethical fabric of our country.

For instance:
One wants to stand against illegal immigration - you are immediately a racist
One is white and doesn't support Obama -you are a racist

Those are just a couple quick hits, but it goes on and on.

I have debates with my friends all the time, given a few have gotten upset about it. For the most part though Ive never really had any problems. You just have to be considerate and remember your talking to another human.

When a debate resorts to name calling, it's no longer a debate. It's a catfight.

Yes, it can be done. But both parties have to be careful. If you can argue without invoking your opponent's ego, you can have a civilized debate.

The name calling in the first presidential debate was pretty pathetic, mostly on McCain's side... "my friends, Senator Obama has no idea what he's talking... blah blah blah." I found this totally insulting. Don't tell me he's wrong just because you say so, articulate your side and let me decide if he's wrong or right.
