Yesterday it almost happened to me. It was caught by the bank and nothing bad happened to me luckily. It is amazing what people will do to try and steal from someone. No clue how my number was obtained, but I have seen how easy it can be with people having the right technology. Anyone have it happen to them?

It's happened to me. Someone got the number (but not the PIN, luckily) and tried to run up something like $2,000 in charges. Luckily the bank noticed and stopped my card and everything was cleared.

Do you hand your card to cashiers at fastfood drivethrus?

This is the explicit reason why I don't do that.

The day before I got gas at Costco, and did use it at Del Taco. Most of the time I do use cash for fast food though. I wish I could just know for sure.

They tried to charge $346.20 from a place called Ticket Network 2 listed as being in CT.

Yeah, there are so many ways to steal.

Places where they're notorious for taking your card "to the back" and swiping it are places like carwashes and dine-in joints.

In those cases, I would like to deal with cash more than I do now.

I saw something either on TV or online where they can scan the numbers being in your pocket. The 3 digit code on the back is VERY important for security.

I have used my debit card at hundreds of restaurants, both locally and all over the country. I don't lose any sleep at night.

I wasn't suggesting he worry about it, and for the record, I used mine just as freely.

Was just trying to jog his memory.

I remember the first time someone tried to use my CC#. It was crazy - I went into full-on panic mode, spent a day on the phone checking things etc.

Now it doesn't even phase me anymore. It's happened at least 5-6 times since then. I never figured I would get so used to it.

My debit card got cloned a few years back, I pretty much always carry cash but I remembered going into this shitty petrol station to buy a pack of smokes and thinking "i'll risk it". The arsewipes cleaed my current account out 3 days before christmas which was nice of them.

The bank had the cash back to me within 48hours of me spotting the transactions on internet banking, they made me sign a form to say I would be willing to press charges if it ended up in court. I even offered to tell them where this petrol station was and they didn't seem interested in the slightest.

Those are cards with a built-in RFID chip, extremely popular in Europe and gaining traction in the US. You need an RFID proof wallet if using these types of cards.

Btw...it's insane to use Debit cards. Use credit card instead as there's a max fraud charge of $50 chargde by your bank, 99% of the time waived. With debit cards, you can be SOL.

My mother was victimized at a Raleys gas station recently. There was a hidden card scanner in their machine outside.

Always go inside to cashier to charge gas! Too many card scanners out there!

I had the same thing about a month ago. The bank caught it before I even noticed.

Costco doesn't accept anything but Amex or debit, they also only have pay at the pump. I actually talked to someone today that works at Costco, he has a metal case for his cards. I have known about them for a while. I really don't use my debit card much.

This. We can use ours as debit, with a pin, or sign like credit. We're protected if we sign.

The scanners are becoming big because 99% of the gas pumps use the same universal key. Open the hatch, insert the in-line scanner, done.

Credit cards offer much better protection. Your checking/savings account(s) will not be compromised as they would with debits.

<<----- loves the cash back credit cards with $0 liability protection and much more (return, price, accidental damage, 2x the warranty duration, and so on).

Pretty sure RFID isn't gaining traction in the US (or anywhere really...). You're likely thinking about EMV.

If I remember correctly, as long as the debit card is being used as credit, it gets the full protection of a CC (Visa, MC etc).

That's why I won't ever use a visa debit card again. Happened once to me. Never again will I risk my own money.

I have a plain ATM debit card which works in most places and it always requires the PIN. It can't be used as a credit card.

I have a credit card that I use online.

Much rather have them steal my credit card and use it, because it's not my money.

Ask your bank again if you're interested (doesn't sound like it) but the downside is the $$ comes out of your checking so you could over draft if hacked. So the credit card is a better option.
