I usually check for scanners on public POS and ATM, I always use the same ones anyway.
At the restaurant, it's better if you get up and go to the cashier machine yourself and do it there so you don't lose sight of your card or other shady stuff, since many restaurants don't have wireless POS machines.

Do you hand your card to cashiers at fastfood drivethrus?

This is the explicit reason why I don't do that.

One time a cashier at an Arby's drive through had my Discover card an unusually long time. Like 3-4 minutes when it's usually seconds as they swipe it and give it back. Next day someone tried to charge $2500 at Newegg. Newegg noticed the address didn't match, declined it and called me since I was an existing customer.

I've never shipped a package to anywhere but home (i.e. billing address). I also try not to save my credit cards on store websites, but I hope they double-check (e.g. re-enter data or call) to confirm every shipment that isn't going to the home address.

Those are cards with a built-in RFID chip, extremely popular in Europe and gaining traction in the US. You need an RFID proof wallet if using these types of cards.

Not only Europe, the great majority of credit and debit cards in canada are now chip card. And I heard this week that one of the major canadian banks suspended its debit cards that had no chip so you could no longer use them at all.

Though I do enjoy shopping in the US getting funny looks from cashier with the 'I've never seen that before' comment.

RFID != Chip and Pin

Barnes and Noble got rid of the scan it yourself devices because thieves were reprogramming them to forward the info to the crooks.

Dang nabbit!

About a year ago someone used my credit card number in a fraudulent transaction. Bank killed card, issued new one. Today, same thing but this time the bank said it was a physical swipe, yet the card is in my possession. Fortunately the bank declined the charge. Unfortunately I have to be issued a new card. Yes, it is one day before I go on a road trip.

And to make matters worse, I actually liked this credit card number. For a variety of personal reasons, it was very easy to remember, almost numerological.

You can have the bank overnight FEDEX you a new card for your trip. Call them now, maybe there's still time. IF not, then if you're staying put somewher they can FEDEX you there....

If I remember correctly, as long as the debit card is being used as credit, it gets the full protection of a CC (Visa, MC etc).

That's what the banks that issue the debit cards say to entice you, but it is not true.

They may chose to "gift" you the same protection. However your legal protections are far weaker using a debit card compared to an ordinary credit card.

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0213-lost-or-stolen-credit-atm-and-debit-cards

($500 liability after 2 day on debit card fraud while only a maximum $50 liability on credit card.)

Had a friend who had $2400 drained from her Well's Fargo checking account (stolen debit card number at gas station). It took a full 2 weeks before they refunded her account. That would simply never happen with a credit card since it is entirely separate from your personal accounts.
