Why not ask that question when you have all 3 branches tied up, huh?
Well repaying the national debt is a stupid idea anyway (and would be economically disastrous) but all that aside I would just like to see him grapple with the fact that every single time in modern history where Republicans have controlled all three elected bodies of government they have exploded the deficit/debt.

Only Congress has Constitutional power of the purse.

When Republicans take all 3 branches we will finally break the back of reckless spending. For now, we negotiate.
You say this, but this never happens. How many times do you need to be wrong before you would admit to being wrong?

Everyone knows Republicans don't actually care about deficits or debt and when they claim to care they are lying. What annoys me about this is how Republicans always demand that when they pretend to care about deficits and debt that we and the news media have to pretend to believe them.

Let's see what the Democrats pull out of their hat but they clearly have failed at the messaging aspect so far.

Hoping for the best I hope they've been prepared to invoke the 14th amendment, Not in two three months but right away before anything happens.

What about the 31T we already owe? When does even 1 solitary dollar get paid back?
Why don't you ask King Donnie Two Scoops?
Why didn't he pay back even 1 solitary dollar?
  • Why did Trump, and Republicans, blow up the debt on their watch?
  • Why did they do that under Bush?
  • Why did they do that under Reagan?
Republicans don't give a !@#$. They just want to attack our economy while a Democrat is President. So instead of waiting to pass a budget, they aim to inflict serious harm on the nation. Sounds a lot like treason to me. But that wouldn't be the first time would it, do you remember Jan6 Felix? Because I do.

If anyone cares for the data: https://towardsdatascience.com/which-party-adds-more-to-deficits-a6422c6b00d7?gi=d71b9b81886a

The part I found interesting is:

Second, Democratic presidents tend to have more aggressively counter-cyclical policies than Republicans. This effect is heavily influenced by the fact that both Clinton and Obama reduced deficits when times were good and Obama increased them significantly when times were bad. It’s also influenced by Republicans like Trump adding to deficits when the economy is strong.

They could have raised income taxes to pay of debt and reduce inflation, but I guess that's all transatory...

It's never accomplished what they think it does, and is just punishment for being poor and unemployed.
Here's a link that can explain it better than I can.

I was just reading about how the term “able-bodied,” which we hear a lot in these debates, has quite a history.

Isn’t it in the poor laws of England?

Yes, exactly. And it was rooted in the church and meant to carry moral weight. And it’s still around. I mean, you write about the dehumanizing aspects of poverty. Over the years, this kind of rhetoric has advanced certain cultural narratives about the poor. From your experience, how do you view those narratives?

When you talk to folks in violence reduction programs or reentry programs who have experienced hardship and are trying to make a change, it’s often really hard to connect them with jobs. There’s this idea that there’s just a bunch of jobs out there that people who grew up in incredibly difficult circumstances could just step into if they wanted. And that seems really out of touch with the lived experience of poverty. The broader point my book is trying to make is that this moral division between the working and non-working—”makers and takers” is the Republican phrase—is not the moral line that’s most salient to this debate. First, we’re all kind of takers, right? We all benefit from government programs in one way or another, even if we don’t recognize it. But more importantly, I feel like the moral bright line should be between the exploiters and the exploited—or as Orwell put it, the robbers and the robbed.

That's when Dems step up and demand spending cuts.

Raising taxes to pay for reckless spending is reckless.
Raising taxes to pay for reckless spending is certainly more sensible than the Republican approach of implementing reckless tax cuts to pay for reckless spending.

There was never going to be a real negotiation. The Republicans are insane I'm not sure what other evidence people need. You can't negotiate with fucking lunatics . I'm not sure who Biden thought he was negotiating with.

Biden will cave as long as the debt ceiling is moot and the government is fully funded through 2025.

Honestly, Biden dropped the ball straight into McCarthy’s lap. If he was serious about negotiating, he should’ve been pulling funds out of things that hurt red states 6-8 weeks ago. FEMA, INS/border, Interior/Agriculture, etc.

Republicans would have absolutely loved it if he did that.

Immigration for example - they don't actually give a shit about solving the problem, what they love is being able to complain about the problem. Biden defunding the border police would have been like Christmas.

Public perception. Like P&N, one does not speak for the benefit of opponents, but for those who can yet be saved.
Right except you have to do that with excellent messaging to guide the narrative, which they did not. Also you have to have a serious plan B, not, well we are thinking of doing this but maybe later.

It should have been 'either the republicans stop holding the American economy hostage for their radical agenda, which is never done by either side, or we are going to do the 14th amendment' The 14th amendment idea has only just been floated as a tentative fix down the road. The American people should have already know the message - Republican nuts, 14th amendment to stop the crazies'

The Dems fumbled this.

My understanding is he can't. All the spending money is already doled out for the year. What's still open is the bonds coming due. I hope they set a precedent and pass a budget and debt increase together. Do a temporary increase to hold us until the next budget and then link the two together.

Where did you hear that? That doesn’t make much sense to me - for example social security checks are sent out every month.
