What is the best, Cheap(low price) Motherboard for an Athlon/Duron chip. I have to buy 2 (one for me, one for the ol' lady) overclockable would be a nice plus but not required... going to be for Mild duty gaming (head2head).

I don't think that such a thing exists...

What do u consider cheap? I like products with value. You can get a decent ACORP Socket A Board from Yahoo Auction for less than $105. I use it for my 750Mhz T-Bird.

Try the ECS K7VZM aka PC-Chips M805LR. It's micro-ATX, has onboard sound, and has passed the AMD "Recommended Mainboard" testing procedure.

The Biostar boards on AMD's list are under $100 and have a lower RMA rate than Abit or Asus.

MSI K7Tpro is ~$100. It's not an overclocker, but one of the stablest and most compatible Duron/Tbird boards out there.

$100 for a K7TPro!?!?!?!? Where!?!?!?! Do I have to sell my soul to Satan??? Is the shipping $50????

If it's legit, I'll take TWO!

Well, not quite $100, but close. I've seen $108 including shipping, pricewatch lists $113.

I'd take the DFI AK74.

It's cheap (don't know in Dollar$ though) - the cheapest available in germany at the time I looked, anyway.

It's on the AMD recommended list (although that doesn't have to mean anything. There's even a board made by PCChips in there *puke*)

I owned it for about three days, before i exchanged it for a Asus A7V. I did so purely because I wanted to overclock, and the DFI has no multiplier switches. You can set the FSB in single Mhz steps, though.

As far as I can say, it's reliable and easy to set up.

Plus ... the name owns ;-)

see The Kalashnikov Site for details ...

Yeah. DFI makes a decent board. Probably cheaper than Asus or Abit too (probably lower RMA rate! Blech!).

Don't even bring up the PC Chips board.

The name ownz, though? "Diamond Flower Instruments"?? Sounds like a pussy name to me.

In the next couple of weeks we will begin to see the next wave of socket A MBs with multiplier switches. MSI K7T Pro 2, ASUS A7V Pro, Aopen AK73 Pro and Epox 8KTA+ have all been announced. Some of these boards have even shown up on reviewer's sites. Specifically, the 8KTA+ has been reviewed by 3 sites that I know of with very good results. It is nothing more than a 8KTA with multiplier switches and as such should be priced the same. All of these boards are reputed to be aimed at the value end user who wants to overclock.

I just saw that the QDI KinetiZ 7T is at Outpost.com for $117.95 shipped overnight. Outpost Item #68174. This MB has the multilier switches for OCing but has not yet been added to the AMD recommended list. I will try and find a review of this MB to see how good it is.

Wow these durons seem like killer chips I been rreading some reveiws and they do very well. I can get a 1000 mhz duron cpu for $119 and $139 for MB and have a system that would be equal to a P3 at around 930 mhz. just gotta figure out what MB to get ??

Get the Tyan one; you can get it for less than $110 at buy.com if you use the $10 off $100 coupon! Tyan is known for their rock solid stable motherboards (except for their first Tiger 133 rev's which sucked), and they're good with tech support.

Like I said...just wait a few more weeks and you'll have a couple of great low cost OCing MBs to choose from. MSI K7TPro 2 and EpoX 8kta+.

I don't believe you should skimp on the most important part of a good rig. The mobo is what will bring you stability, reliability and preformance. Get an Asus A7V or Abit KT7. They go for only about $133 which is only $13 more than cheap competitor boards. Just call them up and make sure they have all 10 dipswitches before ordering. Next to the sound card only the CPU should be the cheapest item in your rig. Think about I doubt you will every be sorry about making that decision.
