Working my way through a bottle of Jack and was reminded of my love for whisky, and got inspired to expand my horizons. Looking for decent whiskey/bourbon that doesn't cost a fortune. Suggestions?

(use your best judgement for what constitutes "doesn't cost a fortune")

Go ATOT, go!

Old Forester. It's my favorite bourbon below the "premium" price point.

Regular Wild Turkey 101 is very good IMO - I like it better than, say, Maker's Mark. Personally most of my bourbon money is spent on Wild Turkey Rare Breed, but that is a costlier spirit.

I remember seeing the Rare Breed last time I was in the state store... I don't remember the price but I do remember thinking, "Yeah... no."

Great pick. I like Maker's Mark too. It was my first non-JD that I tried, so I feel a little biased towards it.
It's great quality, but a little one dimensional for those looking for complexity.

I like Maker's Mark myself, but when I want something with a bit more character, I enjoy Knob Creek and Jim Beam Rye (look for the yellow label, not the white label).

I bought a bottle of rare breed based on a prior recommendation from you. It's not bad...but it's not something I'd likely buy again either. It's such a potent drink that the burn overpowers the flavor and subtlties in the aroma. At like 13% more alcohol by volume than traditional whiskey/bourbon/scotch it really has a punch. I find other scotches or whiskies to be more drinkable.

No intention to disparage your opinion by any means. I simply wasn't worthy for it.

Add water. I won't comment on Wild Turkey, as I'm not really a fan, but with high proof whisky, adding a bit of water makes a difference. They're really meant to have water added. AFAIC, you're throwing money away if all you taste is fire going down. Pretty much anything over ~90 proof I'll add a bit of water. The sweet spot for my tastes is 80-84 proof.

It won't break the bank, but won't be wild turkey either. See if your store can get you Conecuh Ridge Whiskey. It is the official State Spirit of Alabama, and is a recreation of a high-quality aged moonshine whiskey which was produced illegally in Alabama during the mid to late 20th century.

I'm a vodka drinker myself but will occasionally buy some whiskey to sip on. When I do it is usually knob creek. Good taste and pretty smooth.
