I don't see any overclocked GTX 460's in the AT review of the 6970/6950.

The GTX 460 is known to be an overclocking beast that can clock up to 950mhz on the core from its stock frequency of ~700mhz.

No, it isn't there. It is on another review, but results are comparative. The GTX 460 might be a beast in terms of overclocking, but the HD 6900 series hasn't been tested yet properly in that regard. They reach esily the CCC limit without voltage increase, also the HD 6870 can reach 1GHz with no problems and at stock, it has no issues to outperform the GTX 460. But the GTX 460 at such low price, is a darn good buy.

immediately after i installed this hotfix for my xfire 6970s, my network speed dropped to a solid 10Mb on an asus p6t motherboard. card reads as 1Gb still, but maxed out at 10Mb. that's the ONLY thing i did. it's even more annoying because i just got my new router and was downloading happily at 150Mb until putting this crap on. i don't know wtf this video driver would have to do with my onboard nic, but it screwed something up.

Alaska Wolf, I would say that it will be very hard to get a 6950 to properly drive 3 monitors. It would be plenty fast for a single screen at 1080P, but I would say you would need a CrossFire setup with a pair of them to run all 3 screens acceptably.
Could you please stop posting because you don't know what you are talking about.

You are attacking the poster and not the post.

If the poster doesn't know what they are talking about then your post should contain technical data and facts, copious quantities of them, proving your assertions beyond all doubt.

Your post is currently lacking in this regard.

Jesus Christ. I thought the OP was full of it. Then my 6950 came in tonight and I'm wondering if he's got the right idea. This install has been absurdly problematic. Let me run over what's happened:

Remove old ATi card from computer.
Install 6950.
Boot up.
Old ATi drivers don't appear to be working. Not a problem, I'll just install the new ones.
Download 110MB 10.12 CCC preview package.
Installs.
Finished installing, but hey, the drivers aren't actually installed! What the hell did this package just do?
Find standalone driver link.
Install, drivers seem to be working fine, although I obviously am lacking CCC.
Computer suddenly turns off.
Cycle installing drivers.
Find 10.12 hotfix.

Installing the "hotfix" now. Hopefully this will leave me with a stable system with CCC and drivers installed. If not, I'm going to have to give serious consideration to switching to NVidia. I think that the 6950 makes more sense, but ATi's driver team strikes me as being incompetent. I've had issues with their drivers in the past when I had a X1900XTX, but this really takes the cake.

Edit - Got the hotfix installed. CCC is now on my computer, but rather than the new (preview) version, I've got the old one. I do not understand how they could be this bad at UI design.

Probably a good idea to use a driver cleaner in safe mode to remove all of the old drivers, then proceed to install the hotfix.

Could be the problem is pebkac too, cant rule that out

I dont know why people are such die hard fans of companies.. Ive used both and havent had any problems with either.

Example, my last computer was an AMD 3800+ x2 with a 7800 GTX and worked great for 5 years. My computer now is an i7 and a 5870..

I just use whats best at the time..

This.

Fanboys have to tone it down a little. I own cards from both sides and i never complained about driver issues because when i have them i simply do whatever i know to fix my PC. I mean if you are a entusiast you should be able to troubleshoot your own rig.

OP good luck with your card, good choice. I'm debating if i should get 6970 CF or GTX 580 SLI.

It's being rerouted. I called TigerDirect and they contacted UPS . It's on it's way back to them before I received it.

12/21/2010 9:29 A.M. THE SHIPPER HAS REQUESTED A DELIVERY INTERCEPT FOR THIS PACKAGE / RETURN TO SENDER PENDING

THIS was the proverbial straw:

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst1012ahotfix.aspx

NO WAY.

I give up, I'm going to pay the extra dough and go for a GTX-570 once TigerDirect credits my card back.

heh heh - I laugh at kids who throw temper tantrums and angry kids who ragequit but I think we need a whole new category of Point-and-laugh for you. J Merry Christmas!

Perhaps if the OP lives in Alaska then he should get the card that produces the most heat. GTX 470's in SLI FTW!

-sounds like he didn't even remove the old drivers ,just put the new card in .it didn't work must be amd's fault what a joke ,you think he'll know what driver cleaner is .
-he should ask for help before bad mouthing any card\drivers.
-if he will post the way he has ,he'd be helping amd by not owning one of there cards .lol

God help me, I don't know about Cuda or Physix.

You know I never thought that when I became 60 years old I'd have to go back to school to learn how to use my telephone, but I actually took a short class to learn more about my HTC Desire. I can surf the web, take videos, and see the weather stats on Anchorage, Shanghai, Scottsdale, and Aspen on ONE of my 7 screens. But I'm still a little shaky about making phone calls. I have been called a "World Class Butt Dialer". Something I had to Google.

Ain't being a Geek simply Capitol?

Heh, well I am in the process of transcoding my anime, movie, and home video collection to a file format playable on a PS3. There are programs that can use the GPU (your video card) to accelerate the process and reduce the time spent doing this. It's helped greatly. Cuda from Nvidia is more widely used and supported, but some can also use ATI/AMD's hardware acceleration to an extent.

Physx well, that's an API that when added to a game can use your Nvidia GPU to do the calculations for things like capes flowing in the wind, flags blowing in a storm, raindrops falling and rolling across objects realistically, particles of ice and snow reacting to the environment, clouds and fog moving realistically in relation to the environment. Things like that. Honestly, I wouldn't even bother worrying about Physx because hardly any games use it.

Well, 2 GTX 460's in SLI will basically be faster than a GTX 480 in most cases, provided that you use a reasonable resolution, and they cost only $180 compared to $400+. With your budget I would run a pair of 460's. I'd say they can even compete with a GTX 580.

As I said, it depends on how much you want to spend and what is important to you. 2 budget vid cards in one case may not appeal to some people. Really if you are not running a high resolution, why would you even want 2 cards?

No profanity in the technical forums please.

Looks like the problem was not uninstalling the old drivers before you put the new card in. Switching from a 5850 to Xfired 6950's gave me no issues when I uninstalled the old drivers first.

OMG, you could use a pair of GTX 580 with Powertrip Off and Furmark to heat your house, then I compliant for the temperatures here that falls at 70F at night, too chill for me hehe.

I haven't received my HD 6970 yet, though this 9600GT is enough to play Black Ops maxed at 1280x1024 and 4x FSAA. Somehow PhysX doesn't work, but that's a story for another time. I chose Gigabyte because XFX was a bit more expensive and Newegg wanted to charge me 36 for shipping, paying almost $420 bucks is insane, the Gigabyte version costed me only $389.99. Lifetime warranty is a plus for XFX, but oh well, never had a single card failing me except the X800XT which died after 5 years of usage and I upgrade once every two years.

Sarah Palin says you can see Mother Russia from your backyard on a clear day. :whiste:

$arah is a liar and a fraud as are the rest of the family.

When that kid "hacked" her Yahoo e-mail account she said she was terrified her family was in danger. Bristol jumped right in to milk it for all it was worth.

"When asked to testify about the text messages and voice messages left on he phone, she had this to say:
“There was one that really scared me,” Bristol Palin testified in federal court. She said she was concerned when a bunch of boys called, claiming they were at her front door and needed to be let in.
“We live in the middle of nowhere in Alaska … in the middle of the woods,” Palin said"

They live, LITERALLY NEXT DOOR TO A BEST WESTERN HOTEL.

I have close friends that live in the neighborhood myself and am over there all the time.

We all know from time to time this stuff happends.

Kinda like the problems you had with the ATI drivers? And yet, you won't let that go for whatever reason.

FWIW: I've owned both nVidia and ATI. I've had no problems with either to be honest. Sometimes I really think that some people frequently defending one manufacturer or another need to get outside, or find a woman...or get paid to talk about the company they're defending...oh wait!

I currently own both camp's.
the only driver problem I've had was nvidia.
That was only 1 game, fallout 3.
I blamed the game, not the video card manf.

Is there any way to get the 10.12 CCC Preview with the 6950/6970? I've tried installing it again, but the installer doesn't actually install CCC or the driver. The "hotfix" package works fine, but it uses the old version of CCC.

1. Uninstall everything
2. Run the WHQL 10.12s with a custom install and select all but display drivers
3. Run the 10.12a custom installation and select just the display driver
4. ??
5. Profit
