Decided to sell PS4 when it comes and get 280X or GTX 770

Given the list of games early on I've decided I will sell my PS4 which arrives Friday and get a new video card. Later I'll get a new motherboard/CPU/memory setup. I can't decide if I want a 770 or a 280X. The 770 game bundle looks good, but not sure if after years of using ATI/AMD I want to change to nVidia. Anybody got an opinion?

Can't really go wrong with either card IMO. Go for the cheaper one IMO, whichever that is.

The game bundles from either brand can be had easily. The codes sell on ebay for much less than buying those games separately.

Im selling everyone I can get my hands on. Preordered a few and will stand in line for a couple more. I do intend to keep at least one

You should get enough to buy a 290X

I'd go for at least an R9 290 personally. It costs more, but is much faster, much better at driving higher resolutions/AA, and supports TrueAudio which looks to be ubiquitous in the future.

Barring that, the 280X is better simply because of all the Mantle games coming.

Nvidia should change its name to Novideo, cause the future is Radeon

Good point about about the game codes. I've actually done that in the past.

I'd consider a 290 if the reviews weren't all panning the noise. If I knew models with cooling options were coming out I'd strongly consider it. I don't need a wisper quiet PC, but it is in a room with my TV so I don't want it loud either. We often game using the TV instead of the monitors.

I'm thinking for me a 290X wouldn't be worth the expense. I am considering a high res 27" monitor, but that would be down the road. I mostly do 1200p and 1080p gaming.

Mantle may give AMD an edge, but I'm not sold on that yet. It does have potential, no doubt there.

I am also considering power usage. I was hoping one card may have an edge there, but I don't see one.

This simply isn't an easy choice for me.

Get a 290. The other two are just rehashed junk from 2 years ago. If ur worried about noise wait for aibs or just underclock it or get an aftermarket cooler.

To be devils advocate: Why buy an expensive card then under volt it? Also why spend even more money for an aftermarket cooler, why not put the money toward a fast & quiet card?

If you need a graphics card right now, I'd recommend the 280X. It has more RAM, is GCN-based and thus will support Mantle, overclocks decently, and is generally more future proof. Although it is based on 2-year old technology, you can look on the bright side and note that it's a "tried-and-true" graphics card.

If you really like the games that the 770 comes bundled with and were going to buy them even if you bought a 280X, then I'd start weighing out how much the value of those 3 games means to you. Additionally, if you plan on streaming, ShadowPlay is a handy feature to have.

Lastly, if you are really considering the 290 but are worried about noise, I'd highly recommend waiting it out until aftermarket cards are released. They shouldn't be any more than $30-40 more expensive than the reference model but the benefits outweigh the extra 10% in price in my opinion.

I believe the undervolting is done to achieve a quieter card. You can often undervolt CPU's, and I assume GPU's as well, and retain the same performance but generate much less heat, allowing for quieter cooling.

I apologize I confused under volt. I thought it was lowering the clock speed for less heat but obviously less performance too.

I think between those two cards the 280X would be the better choice, though either card will be fine. Depending on the resolution you play, 2GB is fine for 1080P, but the 3GB of the 280X will allow you play @ 1440p better.

The Asus 280X is about as well built as any card out there:

AFAIK most GTX 770 AIB models are quiet under load, with the MSI Gaming, ASUS DirectCu, and Gigabyte Windforce the best amongst all those others...with notable mention of the EVGA ACX.

Two things to consider, and it is entirely up to you...but with AMD you will get future Mantle support, and with Nvidia you will be able to use a G-Sync monitor which will allow you get more life out of your gpu since there won't be a penalty for dropping below 60fps due to the refresh sync.

I know of 1 game, what are all the others?

There are at least 5 or so at the moment...BF4, Star Citizen, and Theif are the ones I can think of right away...

Well, so far not getting the offers I hoped I would get for the PS4. Maybe tomorrow they get better. Might mean I have to downgrade my expectations. As of now I am leaning towards the Asus 280X. Would like a 290, but unless news comes of better/quieter cards I won't go that route. The GTX 770 does look tempting, but I am thinking it isn't as future proof as the AMD chips, especially the 290. Just got my son Assasin's Creed Black Flag for the 360 (he didn't want to wait any longer), so the nVidia games bundle is a little less appealing now, and AMD now has BF4.

BTW, if I get the 280X I would prefer to get it from Amazon. Anybody know why it's never in stock there? It's always only available from other sources. Don't want to use Newegg as Amazon's always been better for returns, for me at least.

I bought a 7770 for my gf and got a Farcry 3 code which I used for my own PC. I played the game for 5 minutes, then it crashed. Sigh. That's the last thing I want to deal with.
