So you rolled the stain on then? I'll be doing this later in the season if I can find someone to redo our deck. I'd love to spray on the stain and then backroll it although it kind of irks me to turn the sprayer into a throwaway.

I used a brush deck is kind of grooved from the sun and I'm doing it alone. I thought it would be too awkward to spray, then immediately brush. Way more changing tools than I wanted to deal with. The Benjamin Moore sprayer was about $12 and change.
Using a brush for the cleaner & brighter would take too long that's why I got the sprayer.

I'll be giving DEFY Extreme wood stain a go when I stain my porch I re-did last year. I'll post results then.

I have first-hand experience, having previously owned a home with over 1000 sq ft of wood decking.

This is going to be an every 3-5 year maintenance project regardless of which stain you use. If I had to do it all over again, I would have bitten the bullet and resurfaced the decks with composite boards.

The best tinted stain I found was Sherman Williams. It held up the longest. I bought a piston sprayer (airless) which was over 700.00, but made the job much easier and it helped make the job hold up longer. As others have mentioned, get as much of the old stain off as you can.

Never heard of not pressure washing treated lumber. I've done it many times without issue. The wood is pressure and chemically treated. The chemical typically penetrates all the way through. The only issue I could see is getting too close and damaging the wood itself. I keep the wand pretty far back and mostly use the deck cleaner to do the heavy work.

First heavy rain last night since I completed the staining. I'm glad I went oil based. Thanks for the help and suggestions guys!

Water beaded up dry looking board was under the houses overhang. Earlier the whole deck was beaded up.

Did my porch a couple weeks ago. Used the DEFY Extreme water based stain. First I used their wood cleaner, which worked great and took a look of gross stuff off the wood. Then I used their wood brightener, which also did a good job in make the wood uniform in color and taking out the gray.

I stained the porch a week or so later using a 9" automotive brush and a 5 gallon bucket. Using the big brush was awesome and make the job quite pleasant. I was able to do 2 coats on the whole porch in around 2 hours or so. I am happy with the initial results and water is beading up nicely. I really like the dark color as well.

I mostly chose a water based stain for ease of maintenance, mostly re-application in 2-3 years. I simply use the brightener again, then apply another coat of stain, easy.
