Make sure you don't have anything unnecessary bios stuff running during the post.

Go Start > Run > msconfig > Startup > uncheck any unneeded programs from starting up with Windows.

Run Tune XP to tweak settings (this program really does help).

Using BlackViper's guide, disable any unnecessary services for Windows.

Edit: I just noticed the Linux reference in your sig...i have no idea what to do for Linux tweaks, sorry.

ive got it down to about 30 secs counting the time it takes to load any startup programs, does that sound about right?

My home rig boots up to the XP login password screen in 7 seconds. 19 processes running at boot, only antivirus at startup. Is 30 seconds long? For the computer you have, I will make my best professional guess you have about 32-38 processes running at startup. Too long is subjective. Get rid of startup items you don't need, switch to manual or disable any processes you don't need. That will decrease boot time.

Assuming WinXP: Delete everything in the folder \Windows\Prefetch

yes and no.. ok

first, as others said, check your start up progs, some you dont need

then go to blackviper check out what he says

as for bootvis.. it works but it doesnt.. if you do try it and it works great.. it worked great with WinXP Pro, until SP1 and 2 came out.. then it went to hell..

my comp boots from pressing power button to desktop within 5-6 seconds..

soo if that helps..

as for 30 yeah i think its a bit long.. but hell its what you want

1) download a tool called bootvis. This si a Microsoft internal developer tool which is NOT supported anymore but floats around on thenet still

Run this, option "optimize boot" or something...do NOT use any other options since it might screw your system, especially if you have SP2 installed. Use only the boot-optimization feature

2) get the defragger "perfectdisk"

3) So, use bootvis, reboot. Bootvis will work a bit and lay out files....and, most importatnly, it will create a (XP internal, layout.ini) list which has all the files listed which XP uses when it boots an one minute afterwards.

If bootvis is done...

4) Use perfectdisk to defrag your HD. Use this anyway all the time ebcause it is good So...perfectdisk has a feature it can utilize the entries in "layout.ini" (the one bootvis just re-created) and defrag the HD that way that these files are all "in the beggining" of the HD.

After it is done defragging all your files should be optimally laid out especially for booting.

----> ALL the other tips still apply, eg. like deactivating unneded services etc

I'm glad I'm not picky about my bootup time. I have an average of about 20 seconds with no tweaking.

7 seconds!? Holy crap. My machine boots in about 33 seconds from the press of the power button to the time the speaker icon has appeared in the taskbar (which happens to be the last event in my machine's boot up process). I also have only 19 processes running.

I have a WD 74gb Raptor too and 2x512mb HyperX just like you do...I guess the A64 makes the difference?

I have all startup items and unnecessary services disabled.

somwhow that seems a bit unbelieveable to me. I can understand that time to the windows splash screen....but desktop...eh....

no need to exaggerate.

i agree about the :wtf: on getting to the desktop in <10s. on my NF7-S, it takes almost that long to START booting Windows, let alone finish (running win2k though, so doesn't compare)

when I had a 15K cheetah on a resh install it was about 7 so it could be done. as long as your load is LEAN.

well, I doubt his install is constantly fresh, and cheetahs aren't exactly the most common...so I doubt thats what his times are

another possible problem that might be related...
when i start up there are five "svchost.exe" running, 3 are from system, one from network service and one from local service, one of the system ones is always 10+MB and is the only system one that will stay off

Maybe 7 seconds from Windows Splash screen to desktop, but not from power on. Running a Seagate 15k Cheetah drive would mean runnnig through a SCSI bios first which take 5-7 seconds by itself.
