Dedicated PhysX vs no PhysX question?

Will running a dedicated PhysX card with PhysX enabled result in any performance increase from running no PhysX? Or would it just add new effects without any performance gains?

I am curious if it offloads/stops any alternative physics engine (like Havok) that the GPU or CPU would be running otherwise, and if so if that helps wih performance gains.

The only benchmarking I have seen is with dedicated card vs no dedicated card with PhysX on in all tests. I would like to see results of 'PhysX off' vs 'PhysX on with a dedicated card'.

I like physx in batman because it adds graphical effects that are shut off without it. Lots better atmosphere with it on IMO. There isn't a whole lot of games that use it anyway so I wouldn't sweat it.

I read somewhere that the 750 TI makes a good dedicated PhysX GPU.

I've found that a 650Ti or better seems to be a good dedicated PhysX card. Borderlands played very well with it.

The last time I recall looking at the topic the answer was that you needed a $200 USD card to be worth the effort (assuming your board had the needed slots). It also implied that your cpu would have had to be one of the cheaper end ones.

Overall, a good cpu is better than any second rate GPU used for physics.

A google search should turn up the review, and it should not be too hard for someone to work out if the newer hardware is any better.

Note: having a slow GPU doing physics can mean a worse game performance as the GPU is maxed out. The whole design of the technology does not allow for load sharing between a GPU and CPU when working out physics IIRC, which is why you have to have a very good one to start with (cpu or GPU).

if u have a good enough cpu. Let' ur cpu handle the phyx. I have 980sli i use my second gpu as dedicated phyx. I compare the effect with the cpu phyx. No different at all. Same amount of rocks drops when i shoot the wall in metro.

Is there a performance difference? I know in Batman there was a big difference when I played it running 670s. GPU being superior and having fewer slowdowns.

Dedicated PhysX sounds like a massive waste of money...especially since the performance might still suffer if you do it that way.

Just get a stronger card right out of the box or go SLI...this dedicated PhysX nonsense is sad and no one should buy into it. Especially now that you can buy a used GTX 970 for like 150$...lmao.

A lot of people selling their 970s online right now is what I'm saying. I'm not even kidding. I could buy 3 of them right now, priced at around 150-190$. This whole ram issue may only have created a small ripple overall...but online trading sites like that ebay and so on now regularly feature 970s xD

Unfortunately this is untrue and you have no links to back up your claims. Allot of people might be offloading 970s but they are not dodin it for as you claim $150 when the market value is much higher.

If you sell a used product...then you won't be selling it for full price. You can get a new one for less than 300€ over here.

Sure, some people would wish they would be getting as much back as they bought it for, but I'm already haggling with a few people since I'm buying a few of them to set up a 3way SLI system for cheap.

I got one of them confirmed and paid for already for 160€, which is 180$.

Well over here 970s are like $400 Dollars and you will never find on for less than half that price LOL.

Yea, I do disregard regional differences...but you should still be able to talk people into giving it to you for 200-240 then...which isn't bad ^^;

If they have a mental deficiency and no understanding of how market economics works even on a simple scale then yes you could diddle allot of people into a rip off deal. I personally am not a rip off artist and will always give people the right price.

BS. You cannot tell me with a straight face that if you found any item you want to buy at a very low price, you'd refuse to buy it until the price was higher.

Such as, I'll offer you an R9 290x MSI Gamer video card for $175. You going to refuse to buy it unless I charge you $225?

Only an idiot who has no concept of bargains or how economics works would say yes to the second question.

Put it this way...

I have a GTX 970 and a GT 560ti... I am thinking of using the GTX 560ti as a PhysX card, if it adds to performance...

If it will just allow me to add effects with no performance gains over having the effects disabled, then I will not bother...

The effects aren't worth the extra power/heat/noise/hassle imo, but if it does improve performance as well (even just 5 fps) then I am all for it...
