might as well post it in off topic too...

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TECH/science/05/20/scientists.organism.ft/?hpt=T1

(FT) -- Scientists have turned inanimate chemicals into a living organism in an experiment that raises profound questions about the essence of life.

Craig Venter, the U.S. genomics pioneer, announced on Thursday that scientists at his laboratories in Maryland and California had succeeded in their 15-year project to make the world's first "synthetic cells" -- bacteria called Mycoplasma mycoides.

"We have passed through a critical psychological barrier," Dr. Venter told the FT. "It has changed my own thinking, both scientifically and philosophically, about life, and how it works."

CNN + science news = ultra fail. I'll wait to see this article from a real news source before I decide how much CNN is exaggerating.

So they ripped all the DNA out of a cell, built their own dna from scratch then put it in the empty cell and it brought it back to life.

In computer terms they bought a dell then put linux on it.

Very interesting, but weird that I saw it on CNN prior to seeing it mentioned in one of the online summaries of papers recently published in more scientific publications.

Lol what I was thinking...

I still think its different from constructing it all from scratch

No. In computer terms they bought a Dell, smashed the whole thing apart, then used the smashed-up BIOS chip as a template to build a whole new BIOS chip, then put that into a completely separate Dell with a completely different model motherboard. And then they booted it up and put Linux on it.

lol at typos in the manuscript, I guess it was rushed out the door. With so many authors on the publications why didn't they all proof read it? Kinda funny since Science is one of the top journals out there.

From page 4
The ability tp produce synthetic cells renders it it essential
for researchers making synthetic DNA constructs and cells to
clearly watermark their work to distinguish it from naturally
occurring DNA and cells. We have watermarked the synthetic
chromosome in this and our previous study (7).

Negative. Default Scientists come with Windows. Linux uses open source scientists.
