To me, equality means we START on a level playing field, we have no special advantage because of the group we belong to. However, there are certainly areas where some people are different than others, and it would be stupid to ignore that. On an individual level, everyone is different, and on a group level, various groups DO have real, important differences. Arguing that equality means everyone has to be identical is just stupid.

I thought the whole feminist equality movement died when they realized they'd have to be eligible for a draft.

Women should fight the wars they start.

Ah yes, carrying on the proud tradition of people who start wars fighting in them. That would explain all the rich white Christians over in Iraq

I think the first sentence is some sort of demonstration on using too many adjectives in a sentence, while the second seems to be some attack on equality for women based on the draft, ignoring the fact that the military doesn't seem to be real thrilled about the idea of drafting women in the first place.

I wonder what people's responses would be if I said that about a 14 year old boy.

About the same. It would tell me what's really on your mind. The difference is gender, but the bottom line is sex. And isn't sex the way we hope to merge with the other in unity?

More to the topic, what are you (the OP) feeling? What is the point you are trying to make? Are you not expressing a 'fear' and a feeling that we are 'loosing something you value'?

Seems like you see change and want to hang on to the status quo, that you have moral judgments you seek to bolster, no?

Once you identify what it is you fear, you can begin to examine the assumptions as to why. You will find they unexamined and simply assumed, I think? Then you can ask how you managed to acquire them, to feel what it is you really feel. That won't be easy, but it can set you free from manipulation by your unconscious. It can free you from attachment and open the door to your heart. In this way you can maybe pour on the world what you are hoping it will give you and cannot. One fills oneself by emptying out because at your core there is only the good and the light.

Well, I think what I fear is people pandering themselves to "equality." It's a debate/argument killer because who want's to appear like they're against equality. Typically our lives move in ebb and flow, one particular movement gains ground and becomes en vogue until something goes wrong and a reactionary movement gains sway. My point is that while "equality" is an amiable goal, there reaches a threshold where pursuit of it brushes over important distinct differences.

But I would suggest doing so has been a good tactic for anyone advocating what they deem to be an oppression of their rights.

yeah. lets not act like women were the ones begging to be taken out of the front lines recently.
its throw-back garbage. if it comes down to practicality of keeping the species alive (god help us in a war that size) then we can talk.

Yes, but the question is why are the differences important. You cannot simply assert they are important or assume they are. You need to find what it is you feel. What is so important. It usually goes to some issue of ego and a need to identify with something you have assumed is good that may be under attack.

Equality: that I should have as good of a chance, by law, to succeed or fail in any particular enterprise, as someone else.

In pretty much any other way, we are not equals. We do not need to be equals. We should not be equals.

We are what we are. Where there is a genius, there's a retarded kid. We should not be so separated, mentally (and spiritually, but that isn't going to get better any time soon, by the looks of things), that a person feels envious of another, threatened by another, or sorry for another.

Each of us can do what it is our will to do, and should not be dissuaded from that. OTOH, some people like power. Others come to feel safe with fear. Much of this is nothing but knee-jerk reactions to keep one's mind feeling like they are safe. Both religion links are mostly this.

Some things, though, such as the locker rooms, are simply common sense. It'd be nice to live in a world where people didn't think twice about it--after all, if everyone was emotionally supported and moderately level-headed, what would be the harm in combined locker rooms--but the reality we are in is not that world. In this world, we can be assured that someone would be stupid.
