Defrag issues

I used to regularly defrag my HD, until I got flight sim X. Apparently, every time I defragged, FSX got screwed up and the planes would go through the ground and crash, instead of landing. because of this, I've refrained from defragging, and my computer is probably in dire need of a defrag run. is there any reason this is happening, and does this even have to do with defragmenting?

It makes no sense that this is happening. Can someone convince me that defragging isn't causing any issues?

I never had a defrag that caused that sort of problem,however I would make sure you have latest video drivers for your graphics card and latest patch for your game, plus update to the latest DX9.0c version which is March 2008(its for both XP and Vista).

Btw a good free defrag that I use is Defraggler(for both XP and Vista).

You could also run chkdsk to check your HD too.

Run a Chkdsk /r command from the Command Prompt. You will, doubtless, have to reboot the PC to do so. This will check your file structure and will scan the entire disk surface for errors.

Personally, I haven't defragmented a hard drive in the last six years, but that's just me....

In the eighties, there used to be problems with defragmentation and on-disk copy protection, but I haven't heard of any other such issues in years.

How in the world can the placement of files on the surface of the hard disk platter cause planes to crash in FSX?

A quick Google search indicates that many FS users recommend defragmenting before installing FSX. It's a big install and having lots of fragmented files can cut the framerate. But I don't see anybody seeing problems with defragmentation of FSX.

You should install games on a separate drive. It runs faster that way. It could be that the built-in defrag tools did a worse job than it should. Try Diskeeper. It's rated top for hard drive defragmentation.

Well, FSX just glitches and sends planes through the ground whenever I defrag, but maybe that's just me. So, I guess it's something else that's doing it then...

What window os asre you presently using?
I have Fsx installed on both Vista64 and XP-x64 rigs and never had any issue running it.
I've always installed all of my games away from the C: drive where the actual OS resides.
My only complaint is that the FSx does take forever to load, whether or not I defrag the drive where the game resides.

I just have to get this one of the way: were you running the defragger while playing the game?
