Defragmentation

I was just wondering if anyone could point me towards a reliable defragmentation utility that isn't Norton. Extra points if it's open source.

Supposedly windows defrag utility doesn't do a very good job.

Honestly, I'm not sure why. I was hoping someone here would know better than me.

I too have been searching for a better disk defragmenter----I have been using the disk keeper lite---which is freeware---and somewhat better and faster than the stock windows xp version---but DK lite seems to stumble on various problems---and often reports it leaving fragmented files--and unless you upgrade to the paid version---its not very configerable.

I did download a copy of the Auslogics---but its not rated yet---and not certified spyware free---which I am researching---and the other question regards freeware vs. shareware. So I don't yet know what happens---if this is a free trial and it then becomes pony up $24.95 or it quits or what.

But until I get answers---I will not install Auslogics---its a small dowmload---1.42 MB.----but too many freebies have spyware---usually download.com will certify a given download spyware free---but auslogics is evidently too new.

Check Google for dirms. I say this so that you can get more info on this program. It is very small in size, it is free, and has no GUI. It worked well for me.

The best I have found has just released a new version - PerfectDisk 8.0 by Raxco. It will even allow you to defrag an individual file! It is fast, efficient, and a great GUI.

But remember the cry---extra points if its open source---which also implies free.---that little ole cheap skate me is looking for the freebies---and I now avoid symantec--(1) Because their stuff is almost always bloatware and over priced. (2) --If I pay I expect some tech support---that always leaves sysmantec out of my considerations.

I use the one that comes with SystemSuite from VCom (http://www.v-com.com . It works well but can be slow - I set it to work and go to bed.. SS6 can be had for less than $20. AR via Amazon, etc. Save the rebate money as you will definitely want the Pro version of PowerDesk (PD lite comes with SS6). PDP is a Windows Explorer replacement that incorporates WinZip, FTP, multi-format document viewer and more features - once you try it you'll not go back.

Well,

I did decide to try the two freeware choices---both auslogics---and dirms-S---and compare it to the freeware one I have used--diskeeper lite.

Step one with both programs was to make sure both were malware free---and I installed auslogics first.---but did not run it until I had run diskkeep lite.---so it was dealing with a
well defragmented volume----and it ran extremely fast---found a claimed additional 34 fragments---but Auslogics may look better and run faster than the windows defragmenter,
but in MHO, its not a robust deframenter---it has no configeration options---but then again neither does diskeepre lite. And reading the user reviews on various download sites,
few had any negative comments on auslogics defragmenter ---but at least it was easy to install and it does have some pretty graphics and reports while it runs.

Dirms-S by contrast was a nightware to get registered---and its only a 30 day trial---after which you must register again--but dirms is a totally better defragger because it actually moves files---including system files which most defrag programs won't touch---but only two options exist---either defrag or compress---and dirms is very slow at either---but something I am likely to retain--although I doubt I will also install its companion buzzsaw.---but I will probably register on its forums to get a deeper understanding on some questions I have.
And being a client computer on a network also raises some questions I need answered.

Just the feed back I have---for what if anything my opinion is worth.

If you do a Google search for dirms and find an older version, it does not require you to register and does not have the 30 day use limit like the new version does. The older version I have is a command line program. For the options, you need to type dirms /?.

I have to say that I have not keeped up with the program and the newier versions because the old one works for me. That why I said to do a Google search before. It is a program worth checking out when it is free.

The best defragger around is Perfect Disk 8.0....it is the only Windows 2003 Server certified defragger and is very effective with it's Smart Placement defrag strategy plus the ability to schedule off-line defrags to defrag system files and the page file

Another vote for Perfect Disk.

As for Diskeeper Lite, Windows defrag is already based on it.

And how the hell are good and Norton in the same sentence???????
