Well, considering the op is contemplating a degree in IT(although I suggest something more theoretical like CS or EE), I assumed he had zero years of experience. Thus a degree would help him start much higher in the IT chain (as in not starting at the help desk). Although a degree is not needed to succeed, its a lot easier with one.

spidey07, perhaps you can shed some more details about this 250k a year it professional. I am graduating in may (engineering major) and just starting my career. I went on a boatload of interviews and I was only asked once if I had certs (that was by some clueless hr person). What I noticed about the people who make the big bucks are a lot more business oriented then technology oriented.

Certs are great if you want to stay technical, bu management (or sales) are where the big bucks are at. Most people hired from college are looking more at a management track then those hired from "professional schools" where they just have their MCSA or such. Look more towards the CISSP, PMI, and the such, for they will get you further. Only problem is they require several years of experience before you can take them!

Ah thanks. Makes much more sense. Most of the companies I applied to had some sort of leadership program that we all have to go through for like a year or two.

Leadership, management, and communication skills are what will bring in the real money.

Look, you aren't going to be a hi-power exec right out of school. You need to put in your time and get experience. This experience will enable you to make good decisions. It's not about the technology anymore. The IT professional I described typically has 10 years experience. He "gets it". There are a few here on ATOT that actually "get it".
