apparently this forum has degraded to the point that it is a crime to try and help someone. I myself have been a paypal memeber probably longer than 99% of the members here, and over that history, have never once even tried to be scammed. When I saw the email I thought it would be a good idea to give a heads up to those that use it as frequently as I. I wasn't aware that this was such a offense to the kids of this forum ...oddly enough, with a few searches I've found that not one of the people bitching about this not being a hot deal, have infact ever posted a hot deal in this forum...

Paypal never has websites with "http" you should always check for "https" the s at the end stands for SECURE. The second thing is it doesn't actually go to Paypal the website is http://blahblahblah@tamara.netfirms.com goes to the tamara.netfirms.com you can put anything you want as long as there is an @ sign before the real URL..for example http://www.whatever.com.askdhflaiehalisljlfkajlijslij38008hsl83hhlsf8h8lfh@www.apple.com takes you to apple.com
so yes it is a scam, and don't look at paypal if it doesn't have the https...same thing is true with eBay scams I have seen before.

Everything before the "@taramana.netfirms.com" is treated as a username and password by your browser. If you want, you can do like I did and fill in the fields with some choice words for the scumbags who do these things.

Maybe not, but it's useful. Maybe not to someone who's used to it, but there will be at least 1 person who hasn't been exposed to this sort of thing each time.

meh, you been a member since 2000 and have 223 posts. One would think you reserve you posts for informative, well thought out contributions, yet you've been lurking for 4+ years just to post, "Do all these scam have to get posted?".

Apparently so. This makes at least 20 posted here in the last year. When do you suppose people will read the Paypal home page "Protect yourself from fraudulent emails and websites" and follow thier directions instead of coming here?

Sorry, I have a few more imprtant things to do than memorize the linkage on every website. I thought I'd do a favor and if it protected even one anandtech member, what's the big deal? Get off your high horse please...

I think you need to get of your moron horse, with it's ignorant saddle. We get at least two of these a week, and everytime, NO ONE CARES. Not only that, but if people can't even read from paypal themselves how to prevent being scammed when they sign up and everytime they log in, then I guess it's a lesson they need to learn. Maybe instead of posting about every scam, you can post a guide on how to detect scams, because simply posting one of a million paypal scams (in the wrong forum, mind you.) isn't going to do anything useful.

Got the same email. Reported the scam the the webhosting firm where the site is located. Still no response from them, and unfortunately, this site is still up. Oh well, I tried.

Uhhh, why would you suggest "NO ONE CARES"?! Apparently you cared enough to click the thread and post a response in it. Frankly, I think the frequency of these scam posts is what has made a lot of the less computer savvy people learn that those emails should be recognized as scams. As an educator, I know that for some people, you only have to tell them something once, and they'll remember. But for a large number of people, they need to be told literally dozens of times before it starts to sink in. And, personally, I'd be happier to see a dozen of these scam posts a week (which I only occasionally bother to click on to see if there's a new twist to the scams) than to see even one scammer profit by $1 from someone else visiting these forums. If you don't like having these threads on the forums, start your own forum, become your own moderator, and lock all the scam warning posts with the high and mighty attitude that if people don't remember/read every facet of information from every online entity that they are dealing with then they should learn the hard way.
-My 2 cents.
