I'll add to the HP tech support rant:
Our company had a business-critical server go down last week (Thursday). We pay for the 4-hour turnaround time on our servers because...well...if it goes down, we'd like to have it back up ASAP. HP has the balls to tell us that "Due to the economic downturn, we can't fly your part out to you. You should have it by Monday sometime."
What...the...FUCK!??!?!
Fuck HP...
Also: we still don't have our new part yet.
Wow....I've not had that happen, but I have had Dell send me the wrong part 3 times. It went from 4 hours to 12 hours because the 4 hours starts over every time...The first two times, I didn't ask for a tech to install the part (server motherboard)...
The third, I said, have him come out too. The part got here at 4:30am on a Tuesday morning...I basically stayed at work all night watching movies waiting on the part and tech to arrive. It sucked...the system went down at 5:14pm right when I was supposed to go home.
As for HP, I would escalate the hell out of it until you reach a manager, then threaten to never do business with them again. If you have any number of systems, they should listen. I would give them multiple earfuls and make sure you get as high up the chain of command as possible. Never let bad support like that go when it's Enterprise-level stuff. I know HP has GOOD support...because our HP mainframe here is well supported.
OP: Sorry to hear about your laptop. Home support for Dell/HP/Gateway-MPC is all really lacking. Always buy from Small Business when possible...at least most of their support is in the US, Canada, etc.....not India. Having someone you can culturally relate to makes a huge difference when trying to explain the problem and get proper support. It sounds to me like the screen connectors (cable or where it terminates on the video card) is the culprit. I look at laptops as disposable these days....if you get a year out of them, you're doing good... In future purchases, always buy cheap laptops and upgrade memory where possible... I think the most I've ever paid for one is $550. I let work pay for my $1000+ systems and make sure I get complete 3 year coverage for those.
