The dell outlet PCs are great. I picked up an Inspirion 530S (I think???). It came in great condition, pretty speedy. You can probably get a C2D, 3gb, and 320gb for about $300-400.

Almost all hard drives and CD drives are SATA now.

And Vista isn't bad you know... just have to know what you're doing on it.

First of all, what parts do you have to transfer to a new build? Case and PS? OS?

If you need an OS then it's probably better to just buy a Dell.

I doubt you will beat this even at the Outlet.

If you have a good case/ps and OS already, then just upgrade. I understand Microcenter has a great deal on quad processor ($120 for Q8200). Then get a motherboard, cheap video card, memory and hd. You should make it under $300 if you use budget parts.

Maybe upgrade with AMD. I'm really not sure what the best budget parts are nowadays, someone else can help you with that if you go that route.

Either get a Dell or build around an e5200 and use Windows 7 RC as your OS.

Yeah that is a tough one to beat. I just don't like the upgrade options with that system, but under the $300 budget it's hard to beat. As far as moving things over, the only thing that I'd probably move over from a system that old would be the case and maybe the CD/DVD drives. The HD might already be on it's way out and the faster SATA HD's these days will make things quite a bit snappier over the older PATA drives of that era.

i've been leaning towards just buying a dell outlet computer .. but what do I do with the old one (assuming I can't find a buyer on AT)?

You always need to have more than one computer for backup and testing.

You can recycle it. You don't get anything back except for the warm fuzzy feeling of helping the environment. Or you can donate it it to a church or other charity for a little tax break. Just make sure you wipe the drive...

Personally I'd use it for storage or for a test system, if needed. You can also recycle it too, but that is up to you. I have 3 computers in the garage right now and have used several of the parts in the last 2-3 years on other builds or for friends/families systems.

Wouldn't it be more fun &n a good learning experience for you to build an upgrade yourself instead of buying a dell box?

basically you'll need motherboard, cpu, ram & video card, and most likely a new power supply.

consider buying a combo deal to score a lower overall price.
you can buy combos including a cpu and a motherboard together in one package.

You could do it within your budget. If you can find more $ then buy a higher-end video card.

Gifting old one to your dad sounds really nice.

or else you might use it to learn Linux.
or maybe connect it to your tv & use to play movie files.
