I have a dvdrom, a cdrw, and a hdd.

i put the cdrw on secondary master. the hdd on primary master and the dvdrom on primary slave.

when i tried to install windows, from either cd drive, it would freeze or give errors at the partitioning point of the install.

i took dvdrom out so hdd was on single and cdrw was master secondary, and it worked fine.

what the heck??

any one have any idea what the difference was?

thanks
david

hmmm, should have nothing to do with your primary/slave setup....perhaps a Hdd issue...

try installing WinXP again this time with the CDRW as primary slave and DVDROM as secondary master... if you get the same error... it might just be a HDD problem... also if the install works with just the HD on primary master... plug the DVD and CDRW to the secondary IDE... this setup isn't ideal for ripping CDs but if it works... it won't be too bad... I have this sort of settup simply because my IDE cables don't reach the CDRW & DVD drives for HD master CD slave settup (I have two HDs)... anyways... try it out and post results... I'll keep an eye on this thread... GOOD LUCK!!!

I'm not sure which company HDD you're using, but this piece of information could help you. Make sure the jumpers are set correctly. If you have a Western Digital (Not sure if the other companies do this now) they have two settings for Master with the jumper. They Have Single(Master) and Master. Single(Master) is for when the drive is the only one on the IDE channel, and Master is for when it is the Master of the other device on the channel. If you set it as Single(Master) and add another device to the channel, it will not work correctly, and could cause permanent damage to both devices.

haha duno about permanant damage.... lol

it is a WD800JB. i have the jumper on master and i have the dvdrom on slave. i also have the wd at the end of the cable. i ran all the "data life guard" utilities, and they all reported "no errors".

how accurate are those things? since i did that, can i rule out the hdd is bad?

lmk

thanks
