What kind of temp improvement are we talking about when we compare just-applied vs settled (after some days of heavy use) Ceramiqué?

I can only comment about Liquid Ultra on die and NT-H1 on IHS combination. Temperatures are identical when comparing right after applying and after weeks.

How easy is it to pry off the IHS?
How do I pry off the IHS?
Does this void the warranty?
Will the new thermal paste be squeezed out/away from core when remounted?

So many basic questions. Maybe you should read a few articles/threads first. There's ton of them here in this section. Search function is your friend, too.

I ask the basic questions because anyone who knew the answer could say for example: easy, screwdriver, no, no. Or they could spend as much time writing a facetious patronising answer and I could then spend as much time replying then go and search for said article and spend some time finding the answers. But hey, why be helpful when you can be a c**k?

You shouldn't pry it off as you'd most likely damage the chip with whatever sort of tool that you'd use for prying.

How do I pry off the IHS?

The two most popular ways are with a razor or a hammer+vise. The razor severs the glue holding the IHS to the chip. The hammer+vise method holds the IHS in place while the chip is literally knocked off of it.

Does this void the warranty?

Yes.

Will the new thermal paste be squeezed out/away from core when remounted?

That all depends on how much you put on there.

Hi Jacky,

A couple links to some threads that will shed some light on your questions.

Delidded my i7-3770K, loaded temperatures drop by 20°C at 4.7GHz

Bare-die testing: A delidded 3770k, an H100, and 9 different TIMs

Be sure to read through the OP of each and take note of the hyperlinked posts listed in the OP's.

Thanks for the info, while I like the idea of doing this I probably won't as voiding warranty in such an obvious way would worry me too much. Also unless I can get a 4770 to 5ghz or thereabouts then it doesn't seem worth it, a longer lived CPU has limited appeal whereas a 10-15% faster CPU is definitely appealing.

I'm always a bit wary on voiding warranties as well, but look at it this way... how often do you file a claim on a CPU warranty? I've never done it, and I've been building custom PCs for about 14 years. In regard to computers, most of my warranty claims are on devices with moving parts whether it be hard drives (almost all of my claims have been hard drives) or video cards (the fans are usually the culprit). The only flaky electronics that I usually notice are motherboards. For some reason, parts on them just like to stop working after some amount of time.
