Dell 1100 or 5100? Video Card?

My brother is buying a laptop for school. Another 4 years till graduation(Mech Engineering), What do you recommend for affordable set-ups?

Dell 1100 or 5100? Even 5150 but these are more expensive.

Also which video card for the 5100?

the 1100 uses shared memory for the video (yuk)
the 5100 has ATI 7500

I just ordered the 5100 with a 64mb ATI Mobility Radeon 7500...It is not for gaming just drawing w/CAD...
