Warning

PC Mag listed this as one of the 10 worst products of 2004

Warning

PC Mag is an idiot.

I have this printer ($200 at the time). It is great. Scans and prints over the network copy/fax local.

Not a photo scanner but for documents it does fine.

I have nothing against dell printer, but it would be sux that you when you are out of ink and nowhere else to buy ink/toner except from dell. So I would still buy the mainstream brand such as HP, Epson because I can buy ink at any computer stores.

So why do so many professionals listen to PC Mag then?

Because many "professionals" are idiots?????

If you've been reading them as long as I have you realize how low their reviews have sunk.

I have this printer.
I purchased it when it was on sale with a 50% off coupon so it was $200 plus tax.
I figured I could not go wrong with such a deal.
I figured wrong.

Today it decided that there was no paper in the drawer. My assistant reported otherwise. He said about 100 pages were there when he got the message. He tried loading most of a ream into it, then tried again with 10 sheete, then one. Multiple reboots were done. The unit was unplugged for a few minutes. Nothing made it recognize that there was paper in the drawer.
We called Dell.
They reported that the service tag was incorrect. After working on the matter with 4 different Dell reps we figured out that one of the two prior replacements didn't get input into their system so they thought we had a different printer (the second one) than we did (the third one).
That's right, tomorrow we will be receiving the 4th printer. These do NOT get heavy usage. It is not used to fax, scans about 10 pages a day, at most prints 40 pages a day.
Three different machines have failed to the point of requiring a replacement since the purchase in October.

Don't make the same mistake I did.

Dell comuter good.
Dell printer bad.

Holycrap's Dell 1600n experience is worrisomely familiar to ours.
Our company ordered two 1600n's from Dell in November 2004. Both were deployed, one in medium duty and one in light duty environments. Initially office staff praised the switch to all-in-one units that replaced their cumbersome printers, faxes, and photocopiers.

Subsequently we replaced the medium duty printer three times. We replaced the light duty unit four times. The two common issues experienced with these units are:

-Unit reports "Paper Out" and stops functioning though plenty of paper is in the tray.
(Dell tech support may recommend entering diagnostic mode on printer to check
the status of the paper tray sensor. Ours always reports finding paper.) Power-
cycling unit may temporarily restore printing functions (though usually not.)
Replacing paper trays does not correct the issue,
Changing brands of paper is also recommended and also does not help.

-Unit dies without warning. Unit is completely dead, no display, no response, though
power verified good and unit switched on. Power-cycling does nothing but give your
index finger a reasonable work out.

Dell replaces with refurbished units, and has failed twice to update information in their system, hence we, too, have experienced the "incorrect service tag" issue. The last replacement printer took an additional two days to process while Dell Tech Support waited for Dell Customer Service to correct the service tag information (with supervisor involvement.)

All fun and games until you have multiple offices rioting with pitchforks and torches demanding blood when they are down five (or more) days while you wait for Dell to ship another replacement. Fortunately your staffs' opinion of you changes completely when the Dell replacement unit arrives and dies in less than twenty-four hours (once for us so far.)

If you have a choice, I highly encourage you to avoid this unit.

If you have already purchased or inherited one or more of these and experience multiple problems, deal directly with Dell technical support supervisors when you call. We received two new (revision A04) replacement units this way, and though one just failed, they lasted longer than any others thus far.

I have to agree. This is not a great printer.
I replaced a 10 year old HP laserjet with the 1600n.
I have found it to be not only more prone to odd unexplained "print error" messages, but also slower. I have only had a single paper jam over a couple months of moderate use.
The manual feed sucks. I often get printouts that are slightly crooked unless I take undue care to make sure it's fed in perfectly. That's not great for envelopes and pre-printed forms.
The copier works ok, and you won't get a sheet feed copier/scanner for less.
It's a very large unit for what it is, I think.
It doesn't have the feel of something sturdy.
Also, it's slower than my old HP!
(faster to start, slower to print)

Definitely YMMV then.

We've had one at work since they came out. Light to medium use, workgroup printer that 8 or so people use.

Many reems of paper not a single problem

Same on my home system.

Find it amazing having 6 replacements for two printers!!!!!!

I wonder what the diference is between our printers?

rochlin, I have yet to have a printer error at work or at home. Are you connecting via USB or the network. I'm using the network and it's been fast and error free.

I'm using the 1600n printer networked (ethernet) and get printer errors fairly often.
It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a postscript, pdf, or just regular file.
It can happen when I'm printing a single form or a bunch.

rochlin do you have the latest drivers or have you added memory? I repeat, not a single print error. Rock solid so something has to be different....

Holycrap, I will curse you when/if my printer fails!!!!!!

No problems here as well. It's essentially a rebadged Lexmark X215. Those units aren't that bad.
