The Benq FP951 had a washy/cloudy look to it that wasn't very pleasant, so I returned it. The problem with the 1905 is that I can't see it before I buy it, and if I want to return it there is a 15% restocking fee.
Also, if I get stuck pixels, can I exchange no questions asked?
thanks,
Well, let me add some comments since I just got a Dell 1905FP (19") as an 'upgrade' from an NEC 1760nx (17").
To start with, I only just decided to keep it after a couple days. The size increase and ability to 'tilt' the monitor 90 degrees is what finally convinced me (I do a LOT of documentation work). The image quality is inferior in every way to the 1760nx, though.
First off, the colors are SERIOUSLY washed out. The poster that said to "start off by adjusting the gamma, brightness and constrast DOWN" was NOT kidding. If you just plug it in and run with it, it looks like crap. I mean, it's HIDEOUS. The color reproduction is AWFUL. I've tinkered with it some, and it's okay with my desktop and games now, but I still can't get it right for movies. It's very definitely a 16-bit dithered up to 24-bit, no question about it. And while the NEC 1760nx was the same (16-bit dithered up to 24-bit), it looked GOOD. This does NOT.
If ANYONE has a suggested profile that works, and tested out with ColorSpyder or something - PLEASE tell me what to use! I'm really irritated by this at the moment!!
As to ghosting - believe it or not, I did not mind it much in games on this monitor. Granted, I MOSTLY play flight sims where a moderate amount of ghosting actually improves the image. In shooters, it's....definitely noticeable, but not awful. For example, in Tribes - where there is a green or red triangle over everyone's head to indicate which side they are on - that triangle you will see 'double' - a very light ghosted version of it trailing the vividly bright one by a small amount. Again, vastly inferior to the NEC 1760nx, which has NO ghosting (a very pessimistic 16ms monitor - they could probably sell it as a 12ms monitor, it's *gorgeous*)
As to Dell's customer service....well, it's awesome, actually. I have two "stuck" pixels, and called to complain about it. The customer rep said that 2-3 stuck pixels is "within their quality control parameters", so he has no way of guaranteeing if the replacement will have any....but they ARE still sending me a replacement. In fact, they are sending me one right now while I'm still using this one. Once I get the replacement, I will take the included shipping label out and stick it on the box, put my old monitor in the box, and send it back - Dell pays for the shipping back to them, and I'm never without a monitor. This isn't any "advanced replacement" or anything where they charge my card or whatnot - this is just their *standard* way of issuing replacements. Gotta say, I
LIKE that.
