Dell 1905FP

I just got this display and it ghosts pretty badly in Unreal Tournament and even in videos.

Does anyone have this display and find that it DOESN'T ghost? I'm thinking about contacting Dell but not sure if they can do anything about it.

Thanks!

Edit: I should note that I put a system together for my sister with a 17" Planar LCD (can't recall the model) and it was waaaaaaaaay better, there wasn't any noticable ghosting that I recall. I think it was a 25ms response lcd whereas the 1905FP is 20ms I believe.

Edit2: I'm using DVI and the native resolution when watching video, but not native during games (although I wasn't using native when playing games on the Planar either).

Not sure if this will help any, but the 2001FP I'm using right now ghosts pretty badly (UT is the game I usually play as well)....

Edit: I'm really starting to think that the people who say "this monitor doesn't ghost at all" really just can't see it or manage not to notice it somehow, but it's really still there; maybe people have different levels of sensitivity or something. My brother claims not to notice any ghosting on the 2001FP, but I almost can't stand it...to the point where I really haven't played any games much recently.

Thanks for the reply. I will agree that I may be much more sensitive than others. I normally run my CRT at 100hz or higher because any lower and I notice the flicker and it bothers me. It just seems that the planar I used before was night and day compared to this one, and the 1905FP has a lower response time

Yeah...I was one of those "high refresh rate" people as well on CRT...anything less than 85Hz was just out of the question, and I'd even bought a 22" CRT that could do 1600x1200 at 100Hz and 109Hz, but I had to return it because it had geometry and convergence problems that I just couldn't fix. I had them replace it, and same story. (It's also not necessarily too practical to be hauling a 70lb. CRT monitor up to the fourth floor of a dorm...)

Also, it seems you really can't trust the manufacturer's response time ratings. They'll tend to just pick the lowest time for any of the colors it displays, and proudly claim "8ms" for example, when the average response time for almost every other color is 20ms or higher...

So in the hopes that it'll be better for gaming than this 2001FP, I've ordered the 2005FPW (the widescreen version), which supposedly has lower response times, but we'll see I guess....

That's a good point about the response time claims.

I ask about anyone not having problems because I searched on google and found people saying theirs was excellent, while others said it ghosts horribly. I didn't know if perhaps this model has different panel suppliers.

I've had the screen for a week now, and I have noticed it. But now, as time goes on I've been growing used to it. If you are really picky about how quickly the image moves across the screen, I'd stay with the CRT. I've been getting used to the sharpness of the text with this screen. It's really something to talk about. Also, the colors are pretty good and I like the design. For games, it works fine. I've noticed ghosting, more so in HL2 than in Doom3. But it seems like it has a lot to do with contrast.

A perfect example was in Counter Strike. Somebody sprayed an image that was a bright purple over a sandstone wall. I got close to the image and moved my screen left to right. It was blurring pretty bad. It seemed like the LCD was struggling to switch from Purple to brown without mixing colors variations of purple and brown to finally hit the intended colors. It seems like most games have a color scheme that doesn't stray to far along the spectrum so it works out. Other than that, all I can say is Use it or Loose it.

Well, it was a "gift" more or less, so I can't return it (nor do I really want the hassle).

I've noticed the ghosting in HL2, it's not bad though and i can live with it. WOW is fine as are RTS and Flight sim's, Doom3 was ok as well.

can you update when you get the 2005fpw about ghosting issues as that is the lcd i hope to get eventually. i also find myself to be sensitive to ghosting. i bought that 1905 and 1805? dell lcds and noticed ghosting on the former and streaking on the latter when people said they they were great. thanks

I received the monitor this past Friday. It does seem to be better than the 2001FP as far as ghosting, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't notice any. It's still nowhere near the level of a decent CRT at 85+Hz as far as gaming smoothness goes, but sometimes you just have to made a trade-off. It's absolutely beautiful for non-gaming apps (and well, the picture looks awesome in games too, except that there's a little ghosting), and it only weighs 15lbs or so.

I'm also playing with PowerStrip a little, because it appears I can actually run this monitor at 75Hz at its native resolution...I just need to see if that actually helps any.

Overall though, the monitor is a keeper...it's as good as LCD's are likely to get in the near future, and I got mine for only $564 after sales tax.

I hope this helps.

Bump it for people who might want to take a look at these claims before taking advantage of the 40% off coupon of the 1905fp.

I have to say that I'm another that was disappointed in the "ghosting" visible" with this display. I was expecting something significantly better than what I noticed with a Samsung 910T, but I would rate this monitor as only slightly better in this department.

As others have commented, this "ghosting" is most easily visible in games like Half-Life 2. If you have 3DMark2001SE handy, watch the wings on the dragon during the Dragothic episode. This seems to be one of the quickest ways I've found to see how well a LCD copes with rapidly changing dark colors.
