Dell 20' to Samsung 22"

I've been pretty happy with the performance and image quality of my Dell 2007FP and I believe it has the IPS panel, but I wish I had gotten a wide screen. I'm looking at 22's now and CCity has the 2205BW marked at $250.

All 22's are TN panels and all store displays are crap, which makes it hard to see exactly how any monitor would perform at native res. I've read the LCD review thread and am aware of the TN problem of image fading at angles. I sit straight straight on and never watch DVD's and don't see that the angle problem would be an issue for me, but what about color?

I prefer rich images and crisp text but I really don't know if my eyes would notice the difference between a TN or an IPS. Maybe so if the store displays were set up right. I've asked CC and CUSA to show me a TN at the native settings. I watched them try but their antiquated PC couldn't go that high

Would the 2205BW be a noticeable step down from the 2007FP for good photos and crisp text?

I'd say more of a step to the side, since they both boast a 1680x1050 resolution. If you're looking for a wide screen panel, I'd start looking at 24in panels personally. They'll sport a 1920x1200 resolution.

If you already like your current Dell, why not switch to it's WS version, the 2007WFP?

Yea... I thought about that when I bought my 2007FP but didn't want to lose the height. The $250 price for the 22" caught my eye because it would let me keep the vertical and get more horizontal. On the flip side I would be PO'd if I lost noticeable color quality, and it's hard to tell in the local stores since they all have crappy displays. The way they are set up I really can't tell the difference in color quality between a $150 and one costing $450.

Yes. Dell is better by far. Samsung is that cheap for a reason. It is certainly not worth to migrate from 2007FP (IPS) to 22? Samsung?s TN. If it is only ws you are downgrading (going to lower resolution) for ? not all good games can do ws and there is way less 16x10 video content than 4x3.

As to using TN+Film instead of IPS for image editing/reading without noticing ? you must be joking. No amount of tweaking can help there. Do a simple image test ? you will see the difference.

As I mentioned above, I don't game and haven't seen a TN against IPS since the local stores all have crappy displays.

That was just to prove/extend my point - you want to switch to lower resolution/inferior quality for a ws/2" bigger screen - it is hardly worth it in my opinion, unless you make the amount of money from sale of 2007fp that can justify it.

Thanks. That's more or less what I expected, but I wish I could see a TN at native res compared to my 2007FP. I'll most likely pass on it. Spontaneous purchases usually leave me wishing I had planned better.

something else to consider is that the viewing angles on tn panels are often much smaller than ips panels.

also tn uses 6bit dithering compared to real 8bit color with isp panels. so you'll lose some accuracy in colors going with a tn

The viewing angle thing is the main problem with colors on TN panels. When you look directly perpendicular to the center of the screen, the top part appears dark and the bottom washed out, and this effects the color accuracy to a significant extent as well. This is minor and inconsequential for most things (at least on my 226BW, probably some are much worse). But for serious photo work, I would definitely get an IPS or MVA panel, and also get a calibrator for the most accurate colors possible.

Anyone have a link showing that 6-bit panels dithered to produce 16.7 million colors are significantly worse, even after calibration, than 8-bit panels? I just wonder if this is really true or just a myth. Of course it seems logical that 8-bit should have a big advantage.

I've used the Spyder2 unit and it did wonders for my TN-based 226BW. When you're looking straight at the center, everything is perfect, but still, at the top and bottom of the panel the colors can't be trusted.
