Dell 2001fp or Dell 2005fpw

My 2 choices:
  • Dell 2001fp (4:3 aspect ratio)
  • Dell 2005fpw (16:10 aspect ratio)

Ok, so I've already taken into account Price and Performance. Now the only thing that's holding me back from making a decision is Widescreen vs. Normal aspect ratio.

I run an eVga 6800 Ultra, so Widescreen resolutions shouldn't be an issue.

I currently use a Panasonic Panasync S110 21" CRT and have used it for about 6 years. It's been quite a good monitor (still is) although I think it's starting to get a bit fuzzy in old age and it takes up too much depth on my desk.

I always have run at 1600x1200. Hence my reasoning for not looking into 19" panels.

I mainly use my PC for gaming - Counterstrike: Source & World of Warcraft are the 2 I'm playing at the moment. Other than that, web browsing, email, IM, iTunes...you know, the typical fare.

I don't watch movies on my PC, although with that said, I could if I enjoyed the experience although I would tend to bet I'd still go to the living room and hit the couch and TV regardless of which monitor I choose.

So I'm looking for opinions based on real world experience from users who may have the same habits I do.

Thanks for your opinion.

I have both.

I like the 2005 better, althougth they're both great. Haven't gamed yet on the 2005, but the 2001 is great. Since movies aren't a big thing, you'd be better off with the 2001 (not to mention you won't have to mess with anything to get the right resolution).

I like my 2005 better for gaming, 2001 for websites, work, etc.

I'd get the 2005, but then I'm a 2001 owner and the grass is always greener on the neighbor's lawn

Seriously though, it all boils down to the aspect ratio of the kind of contents you will be viewing the most. It sucks to have a pair of black bars, whether they're on the top and bottom or left and right.

CS:S has built-in support for wide-AR resolutions. Not sure about WoW.

They won't. Black bars only appear when the content's AR does not fit that of the screen and you select not to have the content's width or height scaled up to the edge of the screen.

That is assuming games will take advantage of widescreen, but is that really gonna happen? Plus I heard widescreen LCDs have backlight bleeding.

I don't know of any inherent technical reason for widescreen LCDs to suffer more backlight bleeding than LCDs with other ratios (4:3, 5:4). They're all LCDs, after all. Edit: But it's quite possible the 2005 itself suffers from higher odds of backlight bleeding, judging by forum threads.

I imagine most recent games would allow you to specify the resolution (therefore ratio), if they don't auto-detect yours automatically. There are enough widescreen LCDs making the rounds (especially in laptops) that games really have no excuse not to support them (if not natively, then via command line switches). Here're some reasons to get excited about widescreen gaming.

I've seen both in person up close, and I prefer the 2001fp. Seemed much better on the eyes in many ways.

I just got the 2005 in today at my job, now everyone has monitor envy. This thing is nice but I have only used the 2001 on rare occasions. So far I really enjoy this monitor, but i am also using a dell d800 with a 15.4 widescreen.

Just fyi,

I ordered another 2005fpw last night. The dell website shows 1-2 week wait for shipping currently but mine shipped this morning. So hopefully if you pick it you won't have to wait long.

i got my 2001fp about 3 weeks ago. i had a coupon on top of a sale that made it $526 (before tax).

im happy with it. its my first lcd. anything was better than my 4 yr old bargain 19" crt with waves in the bottom rt corner. i have an older computer/vid card so i am running it off of the analog feed. i'm slowly buying parts for a snazzy new puter.

my main concern was scaling. i like the 16x12 resolution as direct scale up.

only thing i had to get use to was font jaggies since there is no AA.

i'm not much of a gamer, just mess around with a few fps games.

Well. I did it. Bought the 2005fpw. I think I made a good choice based on my usage and the way I hope to use it as well. I'll let you know. Thanks to all those who replied.

you will probably like your 2005fpw a lot more if you get the widescreen...just because it's currently the "cool" thing to have. and expect every game in the future to natively support widescreen resolution. so i would get the widescreen for a peace of mind despite a few annoyances.

i will, however, warn that you might be slightly annoyed when running games that doesn't support widescreen which unfortunately is still a lot...

also, it pisses me off that my simpson episodes doesn't support widescreen. lol.

WoW does have support for Wide AR as well.

I currently own the 2001 and have a chance to spend a lot of time with the 2005 as well. I think you'll be happy with either choice.

I have a 6800 NU from Leadtek. The website does not list the 1680 x 1050 resolution as a supported resolution--plus it lists the max digital resolution at 1600 x 1200. Has anyone had any luck running the widescreen resolution on a video card that is similar to mine. I am stuck with my video card solution as it's in SLI.

Thanks.
