I haven't recieved any word for my PCI IDE card...I don't know why dell has supposidly such great support. They might be good at maybe returning computers or something, but with small customer letter details, they totally drop the ball everytime with me.

There is a sticky on the forums linked above on that issue. I called WD and was treated very nice and received my card a few days later.

You obviously didn't look for word on the PCI card. You just seem like someone who prefers complaining.

Thanks, I called up dell immediately when this happened and they said htey would open up a ticket and call me back. I called dell because other ATers said they did and got it resolved. That comment by Chandler at Dell was put up 2 weeks after I called them, and no one called me back. Regardless, i'm glad i jus thave to call WD.

They're out of controllers at the moment, but backordering them, expect them within a week.

BTW, they will upgrade your warranty to 3 years because the drive was ordered before the new 1-year warranty policy went into effect. Make sure to ask them to upgrade your warranty (they may try to get you to agree that the 1-year warranty is ok).

Is the IDE controller card required in order for this drive to be detected correctly by the motherboard? For some reason my HD comes up as 127gb instead of 200, but I'm just using the standard IDE channel on my MB.

RandoMBU: you have run into the FAT32 partition limit. You need to create multiple partitions for that drive to be fully used in FAT32. NTFS "can" use all 200 of it, BUT your motherboard may require a BIOS update to detect it at 200 GB (but windows would see it just fine without the update). If you have "partition magic" software, you can use that to create the partitions for the disk. But the DOS fdisk utility will not be able to work properly.

not only that.....XP/2k has one minor issue with drives bigger than 137GB....connected to the mobo's IDE controller. By default, XP will not use 48bit LBA addressing and will only recognize the first 128GB or so (this is regardless of the filesystem; fat32, NTFS, etc.).

You can enable it from the registry (a reboot is needed though):

in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters
add the following
E n a b l e B i g L b a = d w o r d : 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1

it should have been resolved by now in the service packs (though mine wasn't).
