I've never owned an LCD before but I'm thinking of taking the plunge and buying the Dell 2405FPW. Though I use my computer for many things, one of them is gaming, and in the past I've read that LCDs are bad for gaming. I've also read that they are fine for gaming. Does anyone have a definitive answer yet? And how does this monitor's gaming performance compare to the 20" version?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can pass long.

I, for one have seen gaming on the Dell 2405FPW... and wasn't too pleased with it. My roommate got one as a graduation gift, and he games too. He doesn't even use it because of the delayed response time on that monitor for gaming. I had to sell him one of my old CRT's I'd do what Tick said, get a nice CRT if you plan on gaming with it.

2405 sux for gaming. Has "input lag" in addition to being slow. Look into Dell 3007.

If you want to crawl down to measly 20" the monitor in my sig is best LCD available.

Heh, the 2405 is great for games. Depends on what you're looking for I guess, but talk to some actual owners. It's not as sharp and responsive as a CRT, but no LCD is, and the 2405 is as good as the best of them for a lot less money. Check out any review, or talk to owners. I would venture that 99% of them will tell you that this panel rocks for the money. You can probably do better, but you'll be over $1000.

Thanks for the feedback (that goes for everyone). I might go the 20" route. How good is the NEC? I mean, I know you said it's the best LCD, but how does it compare to a CRT for gaming? Are there still shortcomings? Can you see them with the naked eye or are they benchmark shortcomings? Thanks again for any help you can provide.

With the 2405 you can definitely tell the difference with the naked eye, NEC.. not too sure about. Good luck though

Its as close to a CRT as you can get with an LCD panel (at least currently). Some sites actually say its color reproduction is better than most CRTs, if I remember correctly. Is very quick and so shouldn't have any problem with gaming or moving images. It sounds like it'd be worth the money if you want the absolute best picture quality.

There is another option to both of those, and thats the Gateway 21". It has the same resolution as the Dell and NEC (and all 20" widescreen LCDs). It seems like a nice monitor that offers better image quality than the Dell but probably not even close to the NEC. Has some other nice features though (component inputs and it does support HDCP).

I just bought the Dell 2005, received it on Thursday from Dell for around $370 shipped and love it. Great performance with everything I've thrown at it.

I have one. Its great for the money. Its OK for games. I do see some lag when playing Q4. I see like a horizontal line once in a while.

I have one. It's a nice monitor. For games, it's not bad. I have a couple nice CRT's, and I don't really miss them. I am a huge CRT fan, but even so.

It's actually quite nice for watching movies, so if you are in a small apartment and want to ditch your TV, it's kind of nice for that.

Really for me, I prefer a bigger pitch though. I would actuall prefer having 2 x 19" LCD panels that are native at 1280x1024. The trend to move to a smaller pitch has been something I haven't really liked for display devices. And yes, I want to run native in whatever display I have.

Well nothing is as fast as a CRT. Not even close...You'll have to wait for SED technology for that.. But the overdriven AS-IPS are some of the fastest LCD panels out.. While at same time delivering unmatched color and veiwing angles which those other fast LCD's don't at all. They are 256,000 colors (they lie and say 16.2 million) while AS-IPS is truly 16.7 million colors. Contrast is highest along with brightness with NEC.

Since LCD's are superior in pretty much every way to new CRT's (they don't make high end AG tubes anymore like Diamondtrons and trinitrons) - The only real question is how sensitive you are to motion blur. Many people dont even notice it with inferior monitors to what I recommended. I notice on the fastest 2 ms LCD's out trivially but it has stopped bothering me because I get better convergence, text, color etc and just got used to it.

The 2005FPW is based on a S-IPS Panel which is a higher quality panel than the 2405FPW if you want a 24'' wait for the 2407FPW.

I own a 2405 and games are great on it, very immersive. Just make sure your video card will run the games your want to play at the native 1920x1200. It can scale lower resolutions but it looks best at full res.

If you are a Countrstrike nut that needs 100 fps to be happy then you will need to go CRT. With any LCD you are going to be roughly limited to 60fps and the response delay.

I got an awesome 19" CRT for $75 CAD. Excellent geometry (though imperfect like with all CRTs), subjective color accuracy, brightness/contrast, etc. It's the Compaq P910 (similar to other monitors with the x9xx name).

I will get a 2405 when the 2407 have satuated the market, hopefully. My friend has the 2405 and its verrrry, verrry nice. It should replace 2 of my UltraSharp 18s. Maybe I can get a great deal then.

I play cs in leagues using an lcd monitor with a 25ms response time it took some time getting used to it but it's not like it really affects your gameplay. I would say the 2405FPW isnt that great for gaming compared to the 2005FPW due to a higher quality panel.

LCDs are pretty damn good in my opinion and better for your eyes. Its alittle easier to look at a glass of water then at a light bulb lol. And i wouldnt recommend a 21 inch Anything for a computer monitor.. your just too close to the screen. 19 inches is more then enough for most people. Im personally using a 19 and my dad uses a 20. and i find the 20 is just too big

I will go back to CRT only if:
1. They can make them approx the same bulk and size as LCD's.
2. Get rid of that radiation
3. Get rid of the flickering (even at the highest refresh rate, there is still flickering although less perceivable)
4. And lastly get rid of the heat.

Otherwise, I'll stick with LCD especially the 2005FPW.

two 17'' LCD's would be better and have about the same size as a 19'' CRT and the dot pitch would be lower and it would run the same res as a 19'' LCD.

with vsync on it locks it at 60 frames per second. I know this may sound werd but with bf2 60fps is fine but with cs it's terrible does that make any sense?
