so, I'm in the market for a new monitor... I've heard great things both both the 2410 and the 2412, but I'm curious to know if the 2410 is actually worth the upgrade.

my needs are pretty basic -- 70% gaming, 20% working from home (basic unix console-y stuff), and about 10% misc other stuff (watching the occasional movie or surfing the net, but I usually use my secondary monitor for that, not my primary).

my original ballpark was $150-$300, but given that I'm also expecting this monitor to last me 5-7 years like the screen it will be replacing, I don't mind breaking the bank if the quality really is worth it.

(or, if anyone has any other suggestions outside of those 2, I'm open to it!)

What gaming you do ? FPS games ? MW3 BF2 Max Payne 3 ?

Just know it will have 2ms or higher which botches FPS ,,,, the mouse becomes laggy etc.. But if you play RTS and RPG your set.

Between those 2, the U2412 probably fits your needs better.. I own the 2410..don't game, but do quite a bit of photo and video work .. The U2410 is a true High Gamut Monitor, and requires calibration on SRGB amd other modes to really shine ( which it does) ..but, for your use, only sRGB seems to be practical ( could be wrong) .. The High Gamut standard and Adobe Gamut are only useful for Color Managed Apps ( read Publish/Print stuff and the like) .. and , I've never seen it for under 450.00 .. Some fols on here do game with it, so they can chime in ..

My 4 year old samsung monitor died 3 weeks back so I got a 2412.
In hd there is a big difference over same size 24 samsung.

2412 also uses a lot less power since it's LED, which is kinda important if you live in places like Texas or California where it's hot enough already

Both are great monitors but the biggest reason to get a much more expensive U2410 is if you really need the high gamut it offers and it doesn't sound like you do. I would get a 2412 and not worry about it, I personally own 3 and they work just fine for gaming with low input lag and good response times.

I can't speak for how much better a 2412 is, but I have a 2410 and use it like you plan to. Its a fantastic monitor but just know due to the design it can appear 'grainy'. It has a gaming mode which supposedly cuts down significantly on input lag, I never use it cause it gets too bright and I feel like it trys to do auto contrast adjustment. I just leave it in adobe rgb and no complaints. Helps a lot if you spend time to get it calibrated just right for you, main reason I don't switch profiles as I like how I have the color profile set.

I wouldn't call a 2412 better at all because it's basically a consumer oriented version of the more 'Pro' oriented 2410 (wide gamut which is useless for most people, more input options like component and composite, a card reader).

It's a cheaper E-IPS panel with LED backlighting whereas the 2410 is S-IPS if I'm not mistaken and CCFL backlit. I also remember the earlier revisions of the 2410 had some pretty bad tinting issues with quite a few units. Either way you can't really go wrong with either monitor but I don't see why the OP should pay 150$ more for a feature he likely has no use for and may not even notice.

The 2410 is CCFL, so more power, and if it matters it is thicker and heaver..nice and sturdy.. The tint problems(s) appear to have been solved a while ago .. you can get nearly 0 Delta E with it , if that's what you need and you don't want to pop 1.5-2K for an NEC or Eizo ..but, again..I'm reading the 2412 is no slouch and not a bad choice ..

I've had the U2410 for several years, and my son and I are big FPS gamers (BF3). I notice no lag when playing. In BF3, I'm at Serv Star rank 93, and have a K/D of 1.5.

If you have a fast computer and good internet speed you'll be fine. The quality/clarity/sharpness of the U2410 is amazing. I often see opponents at great distances without using scoped weapons (which I don't like).

I've been gaming since 1993... by far the very best monitor we've had, and I had a vg Eizo CRT at one point.

I've had both and also played BF3 on both. They are the same when it comes to gaming both are great no doubt. But with that said if you are not a pro photo editor or really really really picky about colors then go with the U2412. The U2410 will have better colors by a little bit but not much. Save yourself $200 and get the U2412, its alot thinner and uses alot less power.

I have the 2412 and it was my primary monitor until I got my Shimian 27" for $300. The Dell is solid and always well reviewed, even on response times.

Actually I always felt the U2412M had slightly less AG coating then the U2410. But that may just be me I know one thing on my new U2713 their is almost no AG coating which is really really nice...Also yes they have glossy IPS now and also golssy AMVA really nice monitors and very glossy...

Edit: 2240M is the only S series model that has DVI, apparently (IPS).
