It better be more than slightly better than the X1 since it is twice the cost. Paid $750 for my X1 from Dell. The X1 is the king of the low end projectors. XGA is nice if a gamer, but not needed for movies.

Disagree. Go with an XGA or higher projector if possible. I sit 12 ft back from my 100" 4:3 screen and can still see pixels at XGA/DLP on slow-moving scenes/pans. The new generation of projectors are that sharp.

- Native DVD resolution is just a tad higher than SVGA. XGA won't help with this as you suggest.
- You're a probably a little close for a 100" screen Try putting the projector slightly out of focus to decrease the screendoor in this situation.

If you are buying only for DVD's & Standard TV, a SVGA unit is fine, and the X1 image processing is top of the line for standard TV use.

For double the price an XGA unit isn't justified for DVD and TV use. Computer use and to some extent HD use should be the main pulls to XGA. However again most XGA units will scale 1080i and 720p signals so you are somewhat protected.

I have an X1, with supposedly inferior SVGA 800 X 600 resolution. It does a remarkable job with HDTV. XGA would be better, but not worth the premium right now. My next DLP projector will be HDTV resolution of 1280 X 720P.

And one final thing, DLP is the way to go. Very efficient and reliable technology. DLP resolution plays way over it's head, which is the only way I can explain a SVGA projector looking great with HDTV signals.

HDTV looks so good only because you are referencing from standard tv, which is effectively only 320x240, and usually a poor signal at that. HD signals are almost always much higher quality and at that point you are viewing an effective 960x540 or true 1024x720 image scaled down to the X1's 800x600 capabilities. So an X1 is really extremely capable when it comes to standard, DVD, and 1080i content.

Computer use, future media (SDVD), and to some extent hi quality 720p feeds are the main drivers to go XGA. Fact is most users won't notice/or need this premium, especially for 2x the cost w/ inferior standard TV projection, it just doesn't make sense to most front projector shoppers.

The Dell units are well regarded, however. Good deal for the 3200.

I said it before and I'll say it again. The X1 is the KING of the lowend projectors. HDTV on my 96" wide 16:9 is simply awesome for the $750 I paid. I expect for the more expensive projectors to be better, proportional to cost. The X1 is a kick ass value.

i got mine a month ago when they were running a deal in SB@1499 (not including tax and shipping, 1622 with tax/ship) with a free bulb (which is around 250-300)..

plus i heard if you call them to return your order they offer 10% back (my friend returned his because at 10 feet, the image was "only" 70-ish inches). ymmv though, of course.

overall, a great projector (i have a long living room).. gives me motion sickness when i play Fzero (i hate this game, 2 hours and counting on stage 3 or 4), nfl is great to watch and so are movies Oh it also has a dvi-in, which is a nice bonus.

My company picked up a couple of these units awhile ago....here's my pro's & con's far as business use1

Pro:
-----
- lightweight
- came with a good case
- portable
- reasonably quiet
- reasonably bright

Con:
------
- Color output not true. Using VGA cable, yellow looks lime-green, red looks orange. This is an issue with DLP technology..... on Dell's own suport site they say not to call for support as this is a "charastic of DLP technology"
- no vga passthrough or splitter. Not an issue with a laptop, but with a desktop it can be.....can't have monitor attached.



Because of the color problems, we use these as backups and use a much nicer....ala pricey light-box projector now.

Yup.. you can do RGB or Svideo.. But to get 100 inches, it will have to be back pretty far.. much greater than 10 feet, which can be an issue if you live in a dorm.

Also, you'll have to get an adapter for the sound, unless you have something to take the right/left sound cables.
