Great price! I think this is a LG (2MB) drive instead of a samsung drive though.

This is great price for this combo drive, maybe it's time to build another PC with prices all around dropping like they have been. I've never used drives from LG before but I have the Dell 1800fp and that's a LG branded LCD and I love it.

Here's a small biz 10% off coupon code I don't need:

B402682D904B

I believe it's only a one-time-use code, so first come first serve.

Anyone know of any good deals for a lite-on dvd-rom drive? I missed out on the Fry's $18 deal....

You may want to note that tax is probably also going to be charged. Of course, it's still HOT!

This is a hot deal but since I have a beige tower I think I might get the Samsung drive instead. For $10 more, I can get a biege, retail, 8 MB buffer Samsung drive that has gotten great reviews.

It looks like a different drive (probably, HLDS<LG> GCC-4480B) with 2mb buffer.

SamSung DVD/CD-RW Combo with 8mb cache (Manufacturer Part# SM-348BRAS
Dell Part# A0081138) is selling at 77.95. But, it looks like not a black one (horrible color match).

I am wondering which one is right for me in terms of performance and noise. The difference in buffer
affect on just writing reliability? or somewhere else (like speed, or noise)?
Can anyone compare the two drives?
I've looked at a good CDRlabs review on Samsung one, but not LG (HLDS), yet.

I hopefully want to grab the best dvd/cd-rw combo drive for my new Dell 4550.

Anyone know what the rip speed on this drive is? The 2.1x rip cap on my Pioneer A05 is KILLING ME!

PIONEER a05 can rip at 6-8x. You need to: 1. update or downgrade your ASPI to 1021. 2. Enable DMA, 3. maybe patch your registry if you still can't get 6x-8x. Check dvdxcopy forum for patching detail

no it won't burn DVD's

Anybody know for sure the make/model of this drive? I really don't need another CDRW drive but don't have anything that reads DVD's, I'm trying to decide between this and a black LiteOn 16x DVD-ROM.

I missed it, from what I am hearing the 10% off coupons are dead as of the 14th. I had one coupon on my cart that was working and I didn't checkout, I put it off! Hopefully this is not the last we hear of the $60 combo drives!

Lament not, this is far from the last we will see of such deals...these Combo drives will likely be Free after rebate loss leaders at the usual places come Black Friday 2003...Same old story, by then we will probably see combos with 20x or 24x dvd-read, 52x24x52 cd-rw, and even prior generation dvd burners will be easily had for under $100!

I've got some of the earlier LG ones, and the only problem I've seen is that some chipsets (SiS, maybe others), have trouble seeing them in BIOS without a BIOS update. Haven't had anymore issues, so probably this has been fixed. I just ordered a Samsung 32X Combo from newegg, these drives are great. I'll never buy 2 separate drives for DVD and CD burning if I don't have to.

Also, just have to ask to make sure: why does it matter what the memory catch is? 2 Mb or 8 Mb doesn't matter since all new drives support some type of burn proof into them.

Anyway, I wish they would make these in a Silver color, but getting a Black one for some future build probably isn't a bad idea, even though this one is over already.

I did not get mine yet , but there is a thread at fw that indicates it is lg-hitachi..., these look to be exactly same 'LG' drives That are at my local wallmart for $100 plus tax for white/beige version

I got my drive today. No time to hook up yet. but I notice the drive comes with a set of drive rail preinstalled (like the one I have in Dell 4550). Is that a standard practice for DELL DVD ROM parts or I get a used one?
