sorry but if you can, please let me know if the drive is a LG brand. or if you can just tell me if the top cover of the drive has that round metal thing under the sticker.

It's normal, since it was a Dell branded part... they try to make it as easy as possible for their customers as most of them don't really know how to install a drive.

Has anyone tested it with ripping DVD movies? I've got a LiteON 16x DVDROM right now and it works pretty well for rips. Anyone?

Hi, I just received mine today.

I had a 16X Lite-On as well (I have a Dell Dimension 4550 with a P4 2.4 from October's big deal) and this drive is seemingly about the same.

Using DVD Decrypter to rip a single layer movie (in this case, Commando) with this Hitachi-LG GCC-4480B combo drive my rip maxed out at 8.2x (11,008 KB/sec) and was at about 3.4x at its slowest.

DVD Decrypter's output:

Overall I am very happy with it, especially with the CD burning capabilities (combo drives rock!). Thanks to the people that dug this up.

I received my drive(s) today...

It is indeed the HDLS drive, I have installed it in an external firewire, drive configured on Compaq AP550 with WIn2k...I tried to install PowerDVD that was included with the drive (Version 4.0.13), get this...
it gives me message "This product can only be installed on a Dell System"-

I was able to install another copy of Power dvd from my old Aopen 12x drive (Version 4.0 with patch v2417 from www.gocyberlink.com) and payed some DVD movies fine!

So in a nutshell, It surprises me that Dell has gone through the trouble of bundling a "dell only" version of powerDVD!

I have not tried to install the bundled roxio v5.2, as I already have 5.3 Platinum, but I wonder if it too is 'dell restricted'.

I plan to do some dvd-xcopy direct copies later tonight, so I will keep posted on how that goes.

The main problem now is I was to install 4 more of these drives in Compaq Workstations for a client, but the bundled PowerDVD is not compatible...Hmmm...

Moral of the story? I Guess I shoulda held out for the Retail Lite-on Version which is now hitting the street!

Anybody want to buy a Dell Drive (or 4?)!

-MJ

He is talking about DVD ripping... you are talking about CD ripping. Big difference.

Installed mine on a machine running Windows 2000. No problems so far. I've burned a few CDs, and watched DVDs. It has no problems reading any of the media I throw at it. It's the HL-DT-ST (LG / Goldstar) GCC-4480.

I recently got this drive and have problems in reading/writing speed.
With Nero CD speed, CD read speed is only 20X. In writing, the average speed is only 11X
(with 40X compatible disk).

Then, I found the setting at IDE controller is PIO (not Ultra DMA). My computer has 2 hard drive, one DVD+RW,
and this drive. Only the first drive (I believe it is primary hard drive) is UDMA 5 and the others (second
drive in primary IDE and two in secondary IDE) are PIO.

Is the slow performance because of this setting in IDE controller? If yes, how can I change it to UDMA?

Another point: Even if my DVD+RW is PIO, I can successfully write it at 2.4X (maximum speed of DVD+RW).

The reason most likely is the setting's set as PIO and not DMN if avaible.
Depending on what OS you got, most likely windows, and what version it is.
I'll tell you how I do it in most of the Windows versions.

Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties"
Click on the "Hardware" tab.
Select "Device Manager"
Expand the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Conrollers"
Double click on the "Primary IDE Channel"
Click on the "Advance Settings" tab.
Change the "Transfer Mode" from "PIO only" to "DMA if Availble" for your device.
Do the same for "Secondary IDE Channel"

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your help.
I already changed the settomg to "DMA if available" but, the current transfer mode
still said "PIO" after the change.

In contrast, my laptop had one hard drive and two optical drives (DVD/CD-RW and CD-Rom).
All drives transfer rate has set to "UDMA." I can change it to "PIO" and get back to "DMA"
with no problem.

Both computers (laptop and desktop) had Win XP pro installed. I don't know why the desktop
IDE controller did not allow me to change the setting to DMA. Do I have to uninstall and reinstall it?

Delete the secondary controller..reboot..WinXP will go thru Detect Hardware wizard(if it even shows)..allow Automatic..check again for DMA in your DevManager..let us know

I tried to uninstall the secondary channel and reboot.
XP detected new hardware (two optical drives) and installed secondary channel.
But, it still set to PIO mode. Even if I changed it to "DMA if available" but still "PIO."
One thing: Auto detection section in advanced setting has been greyed out. Is it normal?

I don't know how to enable DMA mode.

I did it again. This time I've seen a screen to ask me to reboot.
After reboot, check the tap. Only device 0 set to ULtra DMA mode 2, but not the Device 1
(still PIO). I don't know which one (DVD+RW or DVD/CD-RW) is assinged to Device 0 or 1.

Also, in primary channel, device 1 (I belive secondary hard drive) still set to PIO (even if
"DMA if available")

But, in my laptop's primary channel, both devices (0 and 1) set to DMA (device 0 --> UDMA mode 2,
device 1 --> UDMA mode 5).
