Dell 600m laptop just died?

Hi,

I was using my laptop this morning, and all of the sudden it just went off. The laptop is a Dell 600m with the following specs:

• 1.4 GHz Pentium M

• 1.5 GB Ram

• 80 GB hard drive

• 64 MB ATI Mobile Radeon

• usual ports, optical drives, etc.

Now the only thing was that it was plugged in to the AC adapter, and an external USB HD. All items were plugged into a good power bar for protection. It suddenly went off, and I was not able to restart the laptop.

The external HD had no power issues, and was still up and running. I tried pulling the battery out of the laptop, and unplugging the AC adapter, and then putting them back in, and it was a no go

I have since just tried the AC adapter and sometimes the little LED power light comes on, and sometimes it does not. When it does come on I have tried plugging it into the back of the laptop, and then the LED on the AC adapter goes off???

I have tried to power on the laptop using the battery only, and it will not power on.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I found a post with a similar issue (but the person dropped their laptop).

Could it be either the MOBO or AC adapter having gone bad?

You have a failing DC jack if you wiggle the plug into the computer and the charging light comes and goes. If this is the case you have to disassemble the laptop and remove the board, desolder the old dc jack and install a new one. This assumes you are skilled at PC repair. If not you may be able to get it done locally for maybe $150. Also it may not power off the battery because the machine is not getting properly charged. You may think you are on AC power when really it is running off the battery and then it runs out and is dead completely.
