Dell 640m vs. E1405 or what elese?

My Viao laptop has finally died and I do not want another Sony.

I am contemplating one of these two models. My limit is $1,000 and it is going to be used for Office, web, email, some video editing and no gaming.

I can't fit a large model 15 or 17" screen, so this is the size limit.

640m seems to be cheaper and my brother is pretty happy with his older 640m.

640m seems to be a bit cheaper even though the seem to be similar.

Got any other recommendations?

If you're getting a Dell, don't get the 640m. The whole 600-series was just a POS. I hear the E1405 is nice though.

For about $950, you can get an HP dv1000t 14" WXGA with Core Duo T2050, XP Home, 60GB 5400RPM, DVDRW, 12-cell, WiFi+Bluetooth, 256MB RAM. Add in $100 of your own RAM and you're good

For $899 you can get a Lenovo N100 14" WXGA with Core Duo T2300E, XP Home, 80GB 5400RPM, DVDRW, Fingerprint reader, WiFi+Bluetooth, 512MB RAM. The battery life on the HP will be much better though. Shame Lenovo doesn't offer a real high capacity option

The Inspiron 640m and e1405 are the exact same computer, it's called 640m on the Dell US Business site and e1405 for Dell US Home. I believe the only difference is e1405 gets the option of Windows Media Centre. The old 600m and 630m/640m are totally different chassis designs.

My bad, last I heard the 640m was a technology rehash of the craptastic 600m. But technically my recommendation still stands

Just browsed through HP USA and customized the newer dv2000t (god damn HP Canada sucks in comparison), I think that would be a better deal than the dv1000t!
$1038.99 plus a $50 mail-in-rebate that brings it down to $989 gets you:

Surprising, that is a pretty good deal. I figured they'd still be pricing up the dv2000 series
