Dell 700m vs. Sony S270

Any and all thoughts please. I am looking for an ULRA portable with a large screen, normal keyboard, and great battery life.

Please help

since you specify a large screen, I'm not sure I'd recommend the 700m . It's really quite a small screen, though it is a widescreen. I've never actually used them, but I see them around school all the time, and I personally think it would be infuriating to surf the web on one.
Perhaps someone who owns one could chime in and refute my comment.

Yes I do have the Dell. I am trying to find a replacement. Very linear process.

in that case, I've actually compared the two side by side. The sony is nice, and has a dedicated video card. It's also slightly lighter too....However, it costs about 75-100% more than the Dell, which I can't really justify.

Sony is the opposite of quality of manufacture.

5 of my friends have Sony, 5 of them had to return them to Best Buy (lucky they got the best buy warantee). After 3 replacements, i guess there is a no-lemon policy, all 5 got BestBuy bucks in the value of their respective laptops. They bought Toshibas, and havent had any problems since.

Funny, I work there.. and did the same thing with my sony S160...lol.

15 S270's, none with an issue whatsoever. The Sony has my nod (don't ask why I have 15 of them).

That's not the only problem. They are extremely proprietary. Check out the just released dv4000 by H-P.

Add me to the Sony bashers.

Besides horrible reliability they are usually also loud, if not very loud.

The problem is that Sony ruthlessly put the most sexy equipment in the smallest and most sexy looking cases, so that they look good on paper. The cramped cases later leads to reliablity issues, and they are loud because the fans usually run high RPMs, and the harddrives are mounted right next to thin outside walls etc etc etc.

In a word, get something else.
