dell 700m

HP/Compaq just came out with a couple of laptop that I would consider competitors.

They're a little larger, but battery life and IMO better looking. And they cost less. Crappy integrated video though (I believe the 700m is the same). CNet has a review of the dv1000. Funny how they complain about the integrated video on it, and don't complain about the one on the 700m.

Those are pretty nice, but they are much bigger, and much heavier (about 1lb, which in this case is about 25%). As for the battery life, the standard battery seems to last about 3 hours, and I think the extended battery will probably last about double that (it's double the capacity). I think with 14" screens, CNET probably expects dedicated video cards (such as the Dell's 600m), whereas with 12" screens, there aren't too many "Ultra Portable" notebooks with dedicated graphics. The weight, and the specs (except for the widescreen) of those notebooks that you list would compete more with the 600m than the 700m.

hmm....the 14" screen seems to put it in the thin/light class (t40, 600m).

I have to say that new HP is looking mighty interesting. I wish I could see them side by side. The profesional black box look is allways a draw. EXP. when an IBM is out of the price zone of ability!

700m looks great, and the reviews have been pretty good. I'd snap one up in an instant if it was thinner and about .5-.75lbs lighter.

go to Cnet.com and watch the video review of the Dell 700m, there they clarify the battery weight and look issues. The battery they say actually sticks out even w/ the standard 6cell battery about a half inch, and w/ the extended battery life the battery will stick out about an inch. yeah definately a design flaw i'd say cause it just looks weird that the battery isn't flush w/ the rest of the laptop. And about the weight i'd think that the listed weight is w/ the 6 cell and any sort of bigger battery will add weight like any other notebook.

im not impressed with the video card and video display

keyboard is HORRIBLE, what drunk designed that piece of shit? The number keys are all out of order and it just throws me off like you wouldnt believe....

Its pretty heavy, but it does have a long battery life.

Atleast mine was free.

That depends on a few things. If you are looking for a desktop replacement, something to play games at a decent resolutions and details, or a large lcd screen, the 700m is not for you.

Keyboard and display are two of the most important factors for me, even more so than weight.

I am not bashing Sager in any way, just pointing out a few of the differences. In fact I have sold dozens of Sager notebooks the last couple of years and their tech support is responsive even though 99% of the time you must leave a message for a callback. Sager/Clevo offers a fine notebook.

i was just about to pull the trigger and get the 700m but wasn't sure if i should get the 3 yr warranty and whehter i should upgrade to the 8cel battery or should i get the 4cel and buy the optional 8cel as backup. any advice is welcomed. by the way, the thing that has me wondering if the warranty is worth it, is b/c it states it's a limited warranty. thanks

i ordered yesterday with the upgraded 8cell battery...adds a little weight, but doubles battery life. i didn't get any extra warranty though.

if the 2-2.5 hrs with the standard battery won't be enough...get the 8 cell for the 4-4.5 hrs.

upgrade the primary batery and dont get an extra. Get another in a year when the one it comes with wears out. bateries usually are not coverd by your warenty
