Blatantly ripped off from holycrap @FW. Credits to him. I get $389 when I do the math, your milage may vary. Free ship, but you get taxed on it if you're in a taxable area.

Such a kick ass deal I wish I had a use for it!

----------------------
You can get the deal for $399 w/o the NIC or $419 with a NIC.
Specs on the machine:

700 MHZ Celeron Processor ($150 more for a p3 866, 180 for a 933)
20 gig HD 5400 rmp (40 gig 7200 - add $90_
64 mg sdram memory
No monitor (15 inch is $100, 17 is $160 and $19 is $300)
Warranty (90 day instead of normal 1 year - 1 year is extra $99)
Windows ME
MS Works 2001 and Money 2001
48x CD
1.44 floppy
Intel integrated video card
NO MODEM
Soundblaster (integrated if you choose $419 option, otherwise 64VPCI - save another $10 if you take no sound card)
NO SPEAKERS

Here is how you do it:
Goto
Dell small business center
Choose desktops and then Dell Dimension Desktops and choose L Series (on left side).
Click CUSTOMIZE and you have 3 options:
Choose 700 MHZ celeron
Choose 98SE or Win ME as your OS
If you want a NIC card, choose the first card option, if you dont' choose the second option for, tadum . . OPTIONAL AUDIO AND NIC CARD
Click Configure this system.

Then do the things to make the system CHEAP like:
Accept the $100 discount . . .
Get rid of the monitor
Change the warranty to 90 days
If you opted for the Optional sound card, choose the Soundblaster V64

You should be done and the system is $399 (plus tax in many states) or $419 if you opted for the integrated NIC and sound card.

I don't really see this as a super hot deal. You're looking at $500 shipped for the cheapest version of this computer. This is w/out a monitor and speakers. The 90 day Dell warranty/CS is pretty nice, that isn't even 3 months. Unless you're not comfortable with building a system, I don't know that I'd recomend buying this one. Just a thought.

But remember, you still need:

1. An OS
2. Floppy Drive
3. Cd Drive
4. Some type of video card
5. Keyboard
6. Mouse
7. Labor time required to put it all together (though it is so much fun, this probably should be considered a benefit)

I always forget to include these small components when computing the cost of a system, but they do add up.

The Dell system includes:

Windows ME
MS Works 2001 and Money 2001
48x CD
1.44 floppy
Intel integrated video card
Keyboard and Logitech mouse

I think it's a decent deal, especially with the free shipping. If you're building a system for someone else, given the 90 days tech support, this deal becomes that much better -- any problems, just send them Dell's way!

Software - pirated: who pays for them these days? j/k
Don't you already have windows for your old computer laying around somewhere?

$5 memorex CDrom drive at staples...
Floppy Drive can be purchase from any of those place i posted to save shipping... Shouldn't be to much - ehm about $15 including cables. But who need floppy drive now aday?

Motherboard is ((sound)), [[video]], ((Modem)), and ((Lan10/100)) integrated... More options than that system...

Okay KB$10 + Mouse$5 + Case Fan $5(outpost)
Total still around $440 shipped (give or take)

===========================================
But we will eventually want DVD Drive
Best DVD drive - 12x toshiba DVD+40x CDRom for $76

Then, there's always the opportunity cost (to some) of spending time ordering all the different parts, putting them together, and figuring out any problems.
This is a good deal.

I ended up at $389, they must have dropped another $10.

Never mind, I see it was a typo error at the end of the first post.

Opps!

How do you 'accept' the $100 discount? Does that show up when you checkout? Because mine is not... but I have not made an account yet.

*doh* never mind, I found it. It was in the standard view.

If the price is showing up as $389, I believe that you are not adding the Soundblaster card.
You're right - - this system may not be a great deal for everyone, it is not good for hardcore gaming, no DVD, etc., but the only thing missing for a setup for my mother (who I was buying this for) is a modem (not like I don't have extra 56K PCI modems lying around) and speakers (how many sets of those do I have around?).
My expectation of its use:
simple word processing, quicken, Scrabble and internet box. I don't think I could find a better box for the same price, and I know my mom, the great american consumer, would much rather tell her friends her son got her a Dell computer than he build something with this great big ANTEC OUTSIDE sticker on it.

Here's the deal / system I put together with some local Chinese (only some English) guys who have a hole in the wall shop on Delancy St. in NYC, for $450 tax included, for the kids of my (young) girl friend, who just died. (And who I miss like hell). (The kids live with their grandmother.)

250 watt case w/4 x 5.25 and 3x3.5 (two internal) drive bays. (Also has nice aqua coloring around the on/off button, and bays for two fans.)

Celeron 600, current stepping. (Plan to try to overclock this at 900mhz by running the fsb at 100 (rather than 66); I look to have about 2/1 odds in favor, or better, according to the overclockers.com database.)

A Via based Socket 370/fcpga mobo, that is jumper runnable at 66,100 or 133, with voltage jumpers as well, and voltage auto sensing. Will run latest Coppermines.

128meg PC 100 ram (w/2 memory slots still free)

50x cd-rom, & floppy drive

Lan card (makes transfering all my cable modem downloaded stuff easier).

10 gig HDD

Sound card w/ speakers

mouse (translucent) and keyboard

OK, that's what came with it. Checked it all out running in their shop. They also put Windows ME on it "for evaluation purposes".

I'm adding the second "spare" Smartlink/Archteck 56K voice /fax ESS chip modem (not a software modem) I picked up at CompUSA a couple of weeks ago for $4.88 -- second one is going into my currently building KT133A Athlon system).

I'm also adding a Geforce2 MX video card from Inno3d, with twinview and TV out, so they can play games not just on their 15" monitor, but also on their 30" TV. $120 delivered.

This is a mondo upgradeable system, unlike what you can usually get especially on the lower end from Dell/Gateway/Compaq, etc.. I tried going Duron to begin with, but the mobo /chip combination isn't as sweat. Also, consider how incredibly overclockable the lower speed Celerons are, at least in the current steppings (.18mu). Only thing I wish I had was a mobo with fsb steppings in between 66 anf 100. In case I can't quite make 900. But I bet I can, after reading overclockers.com

Total system cost is $575 before monitor. (They got the monitor free with a really crappy (Intel 486 based) computer give away from their school. But it's pretty good for a 15" - it runs good quality at 1024x768 (if small)). For now they are going to have to rely on me to do burning for them, on my newly arrived TDK VeloCD 12x10x32x burner. (Well, that has its side advantages.)

So they are ending up with a Geforce2 computer running a coppermine Celeron -- I think at 900mhz. (Got to have the video card arrive to see if the overclocking will work.) Well, I may need to upgrade the heatsink fan off of the stock as well. Video card is due in tomorrow. I can't wait to give this to those guys. They are big time excited, and already boasting around their school. It helps at a time like this. Well, it helps me too.

Edit - I CAN adjust the fsb of the mb in 1mhz steps from the bios! Its the DFI CA63-SN mobo. It's for fine adjustments after the jumper setting at the closest speed.

Holycrap, I think you did good. You are right about the name for someone like your mother. Makes perfect sense.

In my situation, my girl friends kids will get more bragging rights by listing parts and saying their stepdad built it for them from the (quality) parts. Situations vary.

Last Friday I picked up a Compaq 5WV254 from OD B&M:
700 MHz Duron/64MB PC100/20GB/42xCDRom/8MB Nvidia TNT2 Video card/56k
$450 - $15 OD coupon - $50 MIR = $385 + tax

I dropped in 2 128MB PC133 ValueRam Chips for $72 total (Buy.com and Outpost deals), a $50 6x4x32 CenDyne CDRW that I got from Amazon in December, a $5 10/100 NIC, sold the 64MB PC100 for $20.

I've never liked Compaq, but it seems like a solid system (and I'd take the Duron over the Celron any day). In true spirt, it is never enough. Anybody know if I can overclock on this MOBO?

if you do this deal be sure to use the dash ebates thing. it's 2% instead of the 1% form ebates. that's a 100% savings!! dell is listed at the dash site as 2% but i haven't tried going thru them so not completely sure if it works but worth a try if you're gonna order, i think.....vroom

The differences I can see are the smaller hard drive, free printer, pc speakers, 1 year msn access and a little less price. However, I also heard that this was a mistake and that DELL has been calling people back and changing the price. I have not recieved a call yet, but I also haven't received shipping confirmation.

Not a bad deal (if it comes) though. Can anybody tell me if the Mobo can be upgraded to a pentium iii?

Well, I just configured this computer on Dell's page.

Ended up with $519, and never saw a free printer option. If I'm doing somehting wrong, please let me know. Otherwise, looks like they have adjusted whatever prices were working in our favor.

Cheers,
-Dave

Okay... got the system down to $399. My problem was that I accidentally chose MS Office instead of Works.

One difference - they no longer offer the 10gb drive. Now, 20gb is the smallest. But, if it only adds $10 - $20, it is great by me.

Question - where is the free printer offer? Please let me know asap, I am going ot help my boss order one of these today.

Thanks!
-Dave

Come on, it's plain dumb not to add 1yr next business day parts and labor warranty plus 1yr phone tech support for a lousy extra $30.00. The target owner for these new low-end computers would need the phone support, and you have to have some sort or reasonable warranty time.

They are right about the Duron being a better deal.
Using the prices from the computer show on Sunday.
Case 250 watt $24
m810 mboard $89 (vga, sound, modem, lan integrated)
Duron 700 $53
Socket A fan $10
30gb Hard drive $100
64mb sdram pc133 $23
52x cd-rom $29
1.44 fdd $11
Keyboard $7
Mouse $5
Speakers $5
-----------------------
Total before tax - $356

Add in a used 17" monitor for $89 or a new one for $130ish and you got a heck of a deal for the money.
Also if 250w isn't enough they had a 300 watt case for $10 more.

Tax would be about $28.50 on the $356 in 8% areas. Less than Dell's shipping fee.
